Let's keep this thread specific to flight and travel information. For those members who are OMNI-enabled and wish to discuss political or non-travel/flight aspects of this, they may do so at: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/omni-pr/1778571-military-coup-turkey.html We'd request that such posts not take place in this Turkish Airlines thread. Thanks.

------
IST Airport is open again and TK flights are arriving and departing. US flights remain cancelled. TK have extended the following waiver:

Due to this situation, for individual and group reservations, provided that:
  • Flights operated by Turkish Airlines ( including AnadoluJet trademark )
  • Departing/arriving to Turkey (including domestic flights) and/or transit flights via Turkey
  • Flights operated between 15 July 2016 – 20 July 2016 (inclusive)
  • Ticketed on/before 15 July 2016
  • Tickets are revalidated untıl 15 August 2016 (ınclusive)

disregardıng of related fare rules

1) All Rebooking/ReRouting will be made without any charge provided that new destination is same IATA region & same cabin class

2) Refund requests:

a) Unused tickets: refund will be made without any charge; or

b) For partially used tickets, when planned trip is not complete; the remaining flights will be refunded without any charge.

3) Extension of ticket validity:

Validity of ticket can be extended until 15 August 2016 (inclusive) without any fare difference or penalty.
What to do if you want to change plans outside the waiver?

You are out of luck. If the flights are operating you will not get a refund or be able to change flights for free. You may wish to check the conditions of your travel insurance. If your country advises against travel to Turkey your travel insurance may cover the costs, however currently neither the US, UK or any EU countries have such advisories.

If your journey involves a TK flight to/from the US these are currently banned. You should be able to change these or get a refund by contacting the airline. This will only apply while the FAA ban is in operation.

As of July 16, the USA has banned all inbound flights from Turkey. Knowledgeable sources indicate flights should restart on 20 July.

Other airports, including SAW, are operating relatively normal.

Looking at the TAV App everything is back to normal (apart from a single LHR-IST cancelled flight, some flights are 10-20 minutes late). Again - very fast recovery...

Will the current state of emergency affect operations of the airport and flight schedules?

Apparently not. TK flights seem to be operated more or less on schedule today.

TK is actually quite good at keeping up operations in troubled waters and was remarkably quick to resume flights after the bomb attack and (failed) coup/airport closure. Well done!

As with France's declared state of emergency and its impact on AF at CDG, Turkey's declared state of emergency and its impact on TK at IST seems to not mean anything for most passengers.

You can't delete the fiasco that happened at IST the night of the coup with one false message of praise. What happened at IST was a disaster. It stripped TK naked. Staff had no sense of belonging or responsibility. Instead, staff abandoned their desks and left stranded passengers hungry and thirsty for hours. Little kids on a school trip were left scared. If a soldier did the same in a battle field, he'd be branded a deserter and in some countries will be shot dead. All the millions spent on ads were lost in one night. If only they spent it on training instead they'd have shown some character.

While I agree with you (sort of), please remember they're TGS employees. Many of them are former TK employees who were outsourced to TGS and lost their free tickets, pension etc. Do you really expect them to take good care of passengers? TK ground operation is a mess - they should really take it in-house.

And maybe some of those staff had little kids of their own who were scared and their sense of belonging and responsibility was to their families.

Does your contract determine whether you do the decent thing?

I for one am not surprised as this is standard at TK and its wholly owned subsidiary TGS. Any problems, pull down the shutters.

I have concerns w TGS regular operations which made me wait over 7 hrs to print a checked in boarding pass at transit.

Not sure exactly where u were, but inside the lounge we had staff prob well into 3-4 am claming people down, checking upstairs for us. Inside the lounge we had drinks available. Water was first gone, followed by juices, plenty of pop and beer leftover. Once again YMMV depending where u were.

AFAIK they are human beings, with their own families and loved ones, under those circumstances I don't blame them wanting to leave when there was an opportunity to do so. My question for you is 'are u willing to sacrifice your life for your company?'

Are there any issues with Intl transfers at IST now? As long as we avoid immigration transfers should be fine, right?

@:-) According to this press release, TK has fired 211 employees given the nonfulfillment of performance criterion and in line with the necessary actions we are taking against the FETÖ structure, attitudes and behavior conflicting with the interest of our country and company.

FETÖ structure is the Turkish term for the Gülen movement.

Seems like Erdogan's big purge has reached government-owned THY.

OT but I disagree with your statement that security isn't causing problems for AF passengers or at CDG. A couple days ago I waited 30-45 minutes, the worst ever IME, for SkyPriority/Acces No.1 passport control; it looked like coach passengers without status were probably waiting in line over three hours. Then some forgotten bag caused most of terminals 2A and 2C to be evacuated and I was trapped on the curb near the far corner of 2A with no way to either leave the airport or get to an area that wasn't evacuated.
