GE/PreCheck and Existing Reservations - do I need to do anything additional?

Do you have to put in the KTN a certain amount of time before the flight to get the PreCheck benefit? I've got my GE interview on October 22nd and, if approved, I'd like to get PreCheck for my flight on October 25th - is that cutting it too close?

it should be ok if you add it at least 24 72 hours before the flight, but I haven't heard too many data points about using immediately following the interview
you should have your KTN/PASSID from your conditional approval which you can go ahead and add to things

I'm not sure it's a good idea to try to add your number before final approval. The computer system could decide that it's an invalid number and not recheck the number again closer to the flight, after you have your final approval.

However, you make a good point, if the flight is within 72 hours of final approval, you do NOT want to add the KTN before final approval, as your KTN will be sent to TSA before your approval and not after.

Wife and our toddler are GE members. No fingerprint record for our child due to his age.
Some questions:
They are flying ORD-YYZ round trip on Air Canada and added the KTN on the booking on Chase travel website. What should they do?
I think there is precheck line for AC right? Once landed in YYZ, where should they go? Is there a GE Kiosks to use? Answer the questions on Kiosk and show receipt to the IO? They don't have to fill out the paper arrival forms right?
Same thing on return at YYZ? Just go to use any GE Kiosk machine and skip the line and questioning?
Thanks

Depending on their purpose of travel they may be eligible to use the automated passport control kiosks or the Canadian citizens line, but they cannot use the NEXUS kiosks.

Canadian airport security doesn't participate in TSA-Precheck and so you won't get Pre on your BP. But if they have their GE cards they can use the NEXUS airport security lane which is like the canadian version of Precheck. Again, it is not KTN linked like the US Precheck, but they want to see the ID's. Again, GE cannot use the NEXUS kiosks to enter canada, but can use the NEXUS lane at security.
When reaching US Preclearance at YYZ, they can use the GE kiosks and probably move swiftly through into the departure terminal

I'm not yet sure that the same goes for boarding passes issued outside of the US by the foreign TSA PreCheck eligible carriers.

My Air Canada boarding passes have only gotten PreCheck marked on departures from the US and not from Canada. But there may be variation even within a single airline, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear differently for AC depending on where/how the BP is printed.

You can add the KTN at the last minute and it'll work.
A while ago I checked in via the DL app, where I thought the number should've triggered precheck, but nada. Check in agent added it (was missing), with Pre on the new paper bp. Recently, I waited to check in at the airport with AA, having verified that the KTN was linked to the reservation. When I showed my GE card to the agent as ID, she flipped it over, re-entering (?) the number before printing. She told me it's common for folks to assume they got PreCheck, be turned away, and come back in a bad mood demanding a reprint, so she tries to head that off.

Known Traveler ID and buying tickets
I have applied for Global Entry and it is currently processing.. it will probably take a few weeks before the whole thing is completed and I get my card. Meanwhile I will be buying tickets for a vacation soon to Africa.
I have heard that you need to put in your Known Traveler ID while buying the tickets so that the TSA Precheck shows up on the boarding card. My question is - can this information be entered later during checkin or as an update to the reservation? Or do I need this during purchase of the tickets?

Yes it can be entered once you get the number and with most airlines up to check-in. Remember that the airline you're flying may not participate in PreCheck.
