Sorry for the delay in replying - I missed this.

I actually fell alseep with the Sennheiser headphones on both legs of the flight. They are heavily padded and I can't remember having any problems lying on my side, though in practice I would keep this to a minimum to avoid any chance of damaging the headband mechanism.

But having said that, the headband mechanism certainly looks and feel sturdier than the Bose QC2 - which I used to own until the plastic mechanism in the headband snapped The Bose QC3 are smaller and lighter with a sturdier mechanism than the QC2 and I have no problem lying down on my side with these on.
