Not sure what more I can add Genuis1.

I think they are the old F sofas, I didn't really take that much notice.

There are a couple of rows of computers at one end of the upstairs section with drinks and snack bar at this end as well. There is another drinks/snacks bar at the other end of the lounge and a larger bar with spirits, bubbly etc as well as the chefs bar around the corner. There is a playroom, I think, down that far end.
There is also a separate restaurant area with tables and chairs. I assume this is used for the evening pre-flight meal services.

There is also a smaller section downstairs with another drink/snack bar.

Nothing much else to report.

Part 3 JFK - LHR

The photos

I have parked the AONE in JFK for the time being and will back to that later in the year. For the time being I need to get back to the UK. Thanks to AA eVIP vouchers I was able to pay whY and Fly J for this part of the report.

I awoke early as my body had no idea what time zone it should be in. This was good as I needed to try and stay awake now until bed time in the UK some 13 or so hours later. This was to be the first time I had caught an east coast US to LHR flight that was not an over night flight. I looked forward to not arriving in London at stupid o’clock in the morning.

I was too early for the ‘in lounge’ breakfast at the hotel and instead caught the 06:30 bus to JFK. The AA terminal was the first port of call and I was inside queuing in the First class line thanks to my Executive Platinum card.

The business class queue had about 8 or 9 people in it and the F queue had one person in front of me. I overheard part of a conversation between two people in the biz queue. I didn’t catch the first part but the response was ‘I think there is only one queue.’ I thought huh? What do you think I am doing standing here? Oh well if they are too stupid to figure out there was a queue for Biz and another for F then that is their problem.

I was called over and handed over my passport and stated I was off to London. My BP was issued quickly and the agent wished me a pleasant flight and I was on my way to security. There was a fast track line which moved pretty quickly and after my BP and passport were checked I was free to partially undress for the security scan.

This was a painless affair and I was soon walking straight on and up the stairs to what I thought was going to be the Flagship lounge 25 minutes after my hotel departure.
Alas the lounge is being refurbished – already!
They had commandeered the AC for use by F flyers so I was ushered on through to the very large space. An interior agent checked my BP again and explained the temporary facility and offered me a “citi” branded travel wallet to take away we with me.

Inside there were the usual cereal, muffins, bagels and some fruit along with self serve coffee, tea and juices. There was a manned bar at the far end and computers for use at either end of the lounge.

I grabbed a juice, coffee and a bagel and had my breakfast whilst looking out over the apron. In the distance I could see the towers of Manhattan through the smog.

I went to the gate early, as usual, and then waited for a while. The agents asked people with the green I94-waiver stubs to come up to the desk and surrender them. I did so and the agent said I could put my passport away as it wouldn’t be needed when boarding. I thought this was odd for an international flight. Around 10 minutes later the agent announced they would start boarding soon and also said that contrary to her earlier instructions we would need to have our passports out but not open. They just needed to sight the passport as we boarded.

Eventually the wheel chair passengers were taken on board at around 07:50 and then the call was made for First only travellers. Then Business was called and I walked on up to the entrance, had my BP scanned and walked on down the ramp.

Flight AA142 JFK-LHR Seat 9J
Aircraft: 777-200
Departure time: 08:25

On board I made my way to my seat and stashed my wheelie overhead and kept the items I needed at my seat. It never ceases to amaze me how much faffing about people do when boarding a plane. They are in and out of their bags getting this and that. Are people really that scatter brained that they can’t be prepared for the flight?

I am invariably sitting there rearing to go whilst there is chaos about me as people sort themselves out.
Whilst I am in rant mode I may as well add a gripe about the constant chatter by people on their mobile phones whilst boarding. Can people really not live without being in constant touch until the very last minute?

The flight was packed to the gunnels and I think the only free seats were a couple up in the pointy bit.

Amenity kits, blankets and pillows were at the seat when I boarded and after things settled down a bit the crew came around with OJ, water and bubbles (in plastic glasses) to partake of. Yes even at 08:10 I chose champagne – so what of it?

We pushed back at 08:25 and the menus were handed out whilst taxiing. At first the wrong ones were handed out. I was wondering why they were in English and Portuguese. I checked the back page and saw they were for US-GRU. I wonder if I was the only one that could have told the crew what flight the menus were for?

Anyway they rectified the situation and replaced the menus with ones showing our Brunch and Snack service to the UK.

Brunch

To Start

Your choice of juices
Orange, Apple, Tomato
A selection of fine traditional and herb teas

Fresh seasonal fruit

Yoghurt

Cereal served with seasonal berries

Breakfast Breads
As assortment of warm breads

Main Course
Cheese Omelette
Monterey Jack cheese and pepper omelette with pomodoro sauce, sautéed mushrooms, potato croquette and sun-dried tomato basil turkey sausage

While Wheat Pancakes
Golden brown pancakes offered with scrambled eggs and potato cake with blueberry sauce

Chicken Quesadillas
Flour tortillas filled with chicken and smoked Gouda served with sautéed bell pepper and onions

Mid-Flight Snack
Basil caciotta and white cheddar cheese accompanied by seasonal grapes

Champagne
Pommery Brut Champagne

Founded in the 1830’s, Pommery is recognised as one of the Grande Marque vintners in the renowned Champagne region of France. This dry, white sparkling wine of crisp tartness and savoury toasted apple bouquet is considered by many to be the epitome of fine Champagne, earning four starts in Decanter magazine.

White Wines
Joseph Drouhin Rully Chardonnay

In the southern part of the Cote d’Or lie the vineyards of Rully. As in the rest of Burgundy, the continental climate, with its warm summer and mild fall, is very favourable to the good maturity of grapes. Rully is a delicious white Burgundy wine which resembles the whites from the Cote de Beaune: a luminous, golden green colour, a toasty, fruity nose, a refined, elegant body
with floral and cinnamon notes.

Groom Lenswood Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide Hills, Australia
Australia has suffered many years with a drought, but the Lenswood estate vineyard in the Adelaide Hills has a long growing season and soil that retains water well. The Groom family achieved a tiny but excellent quality harvest last year. The wine is mouth-watering with crisp acidity, tropical aromas and a bright palate. It is a superb wine with shrimp, smoked salmon, salads and Asian cuisine.

Red Wines
Fontanafredda Barbera Briccotondo

This wine is deep rustic red in colour with an aromatic, spicy nose of red fruits and damsons. It is medium-bodied and soft, with balancing structure to the blackberry and morello cherry flavours, finishing rounded and supple with a hint of liquorice.

Wattle Creek Shiraz, Alexander Valley
Alexander Valley is famous for producing delicious, generous red wines. Aussie winemaker Michael Scholz has added the Australian strength of style, and the results if a magnificent wine with hearty fruit and spice, in a balanced package. Enjoy this Shiraz with red meats, bold chicken dishes and cheese.

Sherry
Emilio Lustau Sherry

Phoenician traders founded a frontier settlement called Shera on the Mediterranean coast. Following Roman and Moorish occupation it became the Spanish Jerez de la Fontera, now known as the Sherry region. Lustau medium Sherry is a hearty aperitif wine, amber in colour, specially fermented and continually blended through decades of ageing to achieve the nutty caramel flavours.

Dessert Wine
Graham’s Vintage Port

Founded in 1820, W. & J. Graham & Co. maintains its place as one of the most prestigious names in Port wines. Careful decanting results in a brilliantly clear and sweet ruby red dessert wine of unequalled charm. Grahams’ Vintage Port fulfils its rich heritage with bold brambleberry and plum flavours slowly mellowed to a satin texture.

The flight time was eventually announced as 6 hours.

Orders were taken after takeoff and then the Bose headsets were handed out. This was followed by a round of drinks. I said I would have a Bloody Mary and got the ‘a lush’ look from the attendant. Oh well.

Perhaps she wasn’t so disapproving after all as she offered to re-fresh the drink on her way back up the aisle.

After the drinks the hot towels made an appearance.

Next up the cart was rolled out with the fruit platters on trays. Offers of cereal, yoghurt and breads were made at this time. I opted out of the cereal and yoghurt but did partake of one of the biscuits from the bread basket.

After my fruit was polished off the plate was taken away and soon replaced with my preferred meal that being the quesadillas.

They were a little dry around the edges but quite edible and went well with the remains of my Bloody Mary.

After the meal tray was taken I settled in to watch a movie or two and some TV shows. Unfortunately the IFE on AA is somewhat limited in choice. I did notice that they have rectified the stupid situation of older versions where the menu list did not say what the movie was. Instead it used to show a still from the movie. If you didn’t recognise the actors you had no idea what it was until you chose that option and went in to the synopsis page. Quite stupid it was, but as I said they now show the movie titles in the menu lists.

A pretty uneventful flight all up, with the next flurry of activity being the crew passing around with plates of the cheese snack about 1.5 hours after breakfast. I declined this offer and decided to wait until the final snack meal which really couldn’t be that far off on a flight this short.

Light Meal

To Start

Warm mixed nuts

Bread Basket
Assorted gourmet breads

Main Course
Ham and Swiss Cheese Croissant
A savoury croissant filled with ham and Swiss cheese accompanied by roasted asparagus, hearts of palm, zucchini and bell peppers

Bulgur Wheat Salad
Cracked wheat kernels with scallops and mussels accompanied by roasted vegetable slaw

Dessert
Citrus carrot cake

We invite you to enjoy your choice of traditional and herb teas

The second meal service started with the signature warm nuts and I asked for the Shiraz wine to go with this meal.

Re-fills and of the nuts and wine glass were made before the trolley came out again with the snack meals. I decided to go healthy, hmm after all this weekend of excesses I needed to, and went with the salad.
It was very nice and was just enough to fill me up along with a piece of focaccia bread and more of the Shiraz of course.

Eventually the meal tray was cleared and we were making fast for the coast of Wales. As we got closer to London and most of the tidying up was done the crew came around once more with trays of the:
Pre-Arrival Beverage
Chilled sparkling water with a fresh citrus garnish.

This gem has been on the menus of AA for quite some time now but I very rarely ever see an appearance. Kudos to this crew for doing it by the book and adding this nice touch to the end of the flight.

After a few loop the loops over Surrey it was time to head on through to west London before doubling back to the airport.

We landed at 20:10 and were at the gate 5 minutes later. I walked a million miles to immigration where one of the two Iris machines was playing ball.

Once through I made a beeline through customs and down to the HEX station. A train just pulled in as I approached and I was on my way back to Paddington at 20:35. A couple of tube rides later and I was home by 21:10. An equal best on getting from aircraft door to my door.

Here endeth the first part of my RTW for this year.
I will be back in July with more tales of the totally addicted.

Great stuff!!

Would you be willing to disclose what you paid for the ticket and the taxes?
Just curious and wanting to be an addict too.

Enjoyable trip report as ever Moomba.
I rather like the daylight TATL flights. It really is too short a flight for overnight.

They don't come cheap. You can get an estimate of pre-tax prices here. Mind you when I bought mine it was during the 10% off sale and since then prices have gone up again ex ICN. You can also use the online tool on that website to give you a quote for your routing that includes taxes. If you are interested in getting addicted you will find plenty of advice and great information over in the OW forum.

Agree completely. If you are not on a BA sleeper service by the time they feed you and you hunker down for some kip it is almost time to get ready for landing.

Thanks for another great report Moomba . I thought that it was interesting that some of the mid-flight snack items on CX in F were also the same ones that I saw in J.

I think the snacks would be around the same for both classes, just that F gets more choices of snacks

Part 4 LHR - JFK - LAS

The Photos

As promised or threatened, depending on your desire to delve into another of my waffling TRs, it is July and I have once again been hitting the skies.

Another weekend of indulgence was planned and for most part executed as planned.

An almost noon departure time meant the opportunity to sleep in a little and spend a leisurely morning at my flat prior to walking up to the tube station. The ol’ two tube and the HEX routine was then played out and at around 10 am I was walking up to the Flagship Check-in area to the far right of the terminal building at T3.

Once inside there were quite a few people and some chaos as those attempting to use the SSCI machines were not having much success.

One gent had printed his BP at the machine but the agent refused to check his bag as he was not eligible to use the Flagship facility. She tore up his BP and checked him off the flight and sent him down to the Business Class desks right at the other end of the terminal. An argument then pursued about how was he to know he wasn’t eligible? There is a big AA sign here and one would expect to be able to check-in here. She said this is the Flagship check-in but didn’t explain further.
Anyway whilst all this kerfuffle was playing out an agent became free and beckoned me over. She apologised for the delay and proceeded to check me in. I asked if she could also print a BP for my flight from JFK as well even though it was on another PNR (yes a mileage run in the middle of all the AONE mayhem). I gave her my confirmation number and she was able to print the LHR-JFK BP and the onward one as well.

She enquired if I knew where to go from there and on my confirmation she handed my BP, I94 Waiver and Customs cards and wished me a pleasant flight.

Inside the main terminal I headed upstairs and went to the Fast Track security queue. The queue was winding a couple of times but usually is not too bad at moving along. However, there was only 1 machine being operated and the queue did not move that fast. Several people gave up and walked out to go around a join the slow track.
The whole situation was exacerbated by a woman who had about 1 litre of cosmetics and other liquids who was stuffing about trying to decide what to save and what to throw. The stupid security people let her do this in the line right up against the x-ray machine effectively blocking all other people.

She and her other half eventually decided to move away and let the queue start moving again. By the time I had almost reached the front they had just handed over a load of liquids to be trashed and went on through the machine. The gent from this pair got pinged and then the magic wand treatment. In the meantime the next gent in the line for the archway was not allowed to move on through. The wand process took an age and again the lines backed up. Are BAA so stupid they can’t make people wait if they are pinged and there is no same sex magician available? The stupid idiot woman agent didn’t even say to the women to come on through in the meantime.

Idiots the lot of em! Rant complete.

I made my way through escaping the shoes off please request that some were getting. It seems, as I noted a minute later, the separate shoe queue after the passport check has been removed and they do like the other terminals now do and randomly ask for shoes off at the normal security queue.

I gathered my belongings and went down to the passport check queues. A minute or so later I was through and free to move on out of the rabble towards the lounges.

I decided to check out the new BA lounge first of all. I approached the big white doors and the swung open revealing the new BA lounge greeter desks. I showed my BP which was swiped and I was welcomed into the lounge.

It is really quite big and long and IIRC takes up all the space the old UA lounge used to occupy.
I wandered down the far end where it was a little quieter.

The lounge has a wine bar ala T5 lounges and several coffee making areas, some tables and chairs for sit down meals up near the quite substantial self serve food bar. There was an area with a lot of computers and desks and a kids play room.

The food on offer was the usual BA breakfast faire. Bacon rolls, mushroom rolls, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, porridge and toast along with some sweet treats.

There were copious bottles of wine in two stations in the lounge as well as a spirits section with fridges with mixers and other soft drinks available.

I asked the wandering staff for a glass of champagne and one was delivered not long after that. I also grabbed the obligatory bacon baguette and a coffee and sat in my chosen area watching the life of the airport go about its day outside the panoramic windows.

Closer to the departure time I wandered over to the Flagship lounge to check the flight was still on time and to see if they had made any more improvement since I was last there in March. It was and they hadn’t.

Interestingly enough, for me at least, after many, many, many, many, you get the picture, flights with AA from LHR this flight was not leaving from the gates down in the far away section. Instead this flight was due to leave from the gates at the end of the main part of the terminal. Still a long walk but quite unusual for AA and me.

Once at the gate I joined the queue until I noticed there was a hidden separate queue off to the left that was for people like me so that I didn’t have to spend too much time with the civilians.

I hopped over to the correct queue and I was flashing my BP and passport in no time. At which time they announced boarding for Business class passengers so I was able to wander straight on down to the plane.

Flight AA105 LHR-JFK Seat 12A
Aircraft: 777-200
Departure time: 11:55

On board I said good morning to the flight crew member at the door and received the response ‘just down on the right’. Funny greeting!

I got to my seat and stashed my bag in the locker above and kept my fag bag with essentials like, camera, passport, wallet etc in it down at the seat with me. At the seat was a pillow, blanket and the new red amenity kit.

Time for another rant. There are bins located above the AB seats and more on the inside edge of the aisle. However, for some reason, probably sore heads, these are left closed whist the AC ones are all open on boarding. This seems to indicate to the stupids in the middle section that they should use the AC bins instead.
OK, OK enough ranting for this trip. Feel free to beat me up if I go off on one again.

Where was I, ah yes I had just sat down at my window seat waiting for the rest of the aircraft to fill. Full indeed it was by the time we pushed back. I don’t think there was a spare seat in the house. Some of the business cabin had deadheading crew in them as well.

After things settled somewhat the crew were out with an offer of OJ, water or bubbly. I won’t even bother telling what I chose.

The captain announced a flight time of 6 hours and 53 minutes.

I notice that AA have an IFE recording for everything now. The crew hardly need to make any announcements. An announcement about stowing bags was played through the IFE, there was another about not congregating in the aisles etc, another for fasten your seatbelts, another for putting away your tray tables etc, etc for landing.

The menus were given out on the ground and a few minutes later orders were taken and FEBO was observed.

We pushed back at 11:59 and made a slow taxi to the end of the runway. I waived goodbye to London at 12:22 when we eventually left terra firma.

Once comfortably cruising the crew came out with the BOSE headsets and followed up with the trolley serving drinks and the famous AA warm nuts.
There was a re-fill of my glass of red wine as the crew member walked back up the aisle.

The hot towels then made the rounds of the cabin before the lunch service began in earnest.
The service was not rushed and they did wait an acceptable amount of time to allow the drinks and nuts to settle down in my belly.

I suppose a posting of the menu is due about now since I was about to dive into the lunch service details.

Champagne
Pommery Brut Champagne

It was in 1858 that Madame Louise Pommery took over the reigns of the newly formed Champagne house and began the arduous task of building the historic estate that one sees today. Chardonnay grapes from the Cote des Blancs are the primary contributors to this lively and fresh Champagne that is remarkably smooth with a soft and delightful “mousse” that never wanes on the palate. Very versatile, pairing well with many light dishes.

White Wines
Lageder “Riff” Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC

Alois Lageder is a fourth generation winemaker and winery owner who has been a prime innovative force in northeast Italy, the country’s primary source for high-quality white wines. This highly rated wine is grown in soil composed of dolomite, or ancient ocean fossil deposit limestone. The German name for reef is Riff and it refers to the wonderful dry, mineral flavours in this bright citrus wine. Nothing is better with any kind of shellfish, fish, salads and white meats.

Wegeler Estate Riesling
A melody of citrus notes – orange, grapefruit and lime – combines with apricot and minerals to form this crisp, sweet wine. Riesling is incredibly food flexible and will enhance a variety of pasta, fish and white meat entrees.

Red Wines
Domaine Cazes, L’Ostal Cazes Estibals, Minervois

Chateau Lynch-Bages of Bordeaux enjoys an almost cult status thanks to the hard-working Jean Michel Cazes, who decided to bring his golden touch to the Languedoc in 2002. This expressive blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan makes for an intense wine of raspberry and pomegranate fruit on the nose. On the palate, the tannins are present in very fine structure and accompanied by an understated oakiness. Strong-flavoured meat dishes, cheese and pastas are great partners.

Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir
The Drouhin family has graced the viticulture and winemaking scene in Burgundy since the 1880s. Joseph Drouhin, the modern patriarch, has not handed over the reigns to the younger Drouhin generation. Joseph also became part of the Oregon Pinot Noir boom in the 80s. Our Drouhin Beaune Premier Cru selection has very refined tannins, making the wine approachable and elegant. Fresh grilled salmon and grilled poultry are terrific matches with this wine.

The trays were dished out with the starter and salad already in place. At this time the crew topped up my wine and offered me some flat bread with rosemary or a white roll. I took the flat bread as it is always tasty.
The salmon starter was a little tasteless but not bad. The salad had asparagus in it which pleased me no end. More bread and wine were offered during the meal. Once I was done with the salad my chicken Provencal was delivered and it was very tender and juicy. The little bowl of sauce was lovely although I could have done with another. I love wild rice although on the silly little plates AA use now it was hard to convince the food to stay on the plate.

After I finished with the main the tray was removed and I asked if I wanted cheese or ice cream. I said a little Ben&Jerry would be the go and also asked for a cup of java.

Both of these were delivered post haste and enjoyed by moi. Finally the chocolates made their way down the aisle which was the perfect ending to the meal to go with my coffee.
A bottle of water was delivered to my seat after the meal remains were removed.

I spent most of the flight either watching MADMen episodes or listening to my iPod.

Around an hour and half out of New York the trolleys made an appearance again with the snack service.

Light Meal
Select From
Uno’s Four Cheese and Pesto Pizza

A traditional deep-dish pizza with a mozzarella, Muenster, Romano and feta cheese blend, basil pesto and plum tomatoes accompanied by a green salad

Turkey Sandwich
Sliced turkey breast served warm on a kalamata olive ciabatta roll topped with Swiss cheese and roasted eggplant coated in tomato sauce, accompanied by a green salad with olive oil vinaigrette

Dessert
Blackberry currant mousse cake

I opted for my favourite the Uno’s pizza and subscribed to some more of the red wine, this time the pinot noir. Again re-fills were offered a plenty during the service.

After the meal I noticed a familiar sight outside my window but in reverse. I was looking down again at Cape Cod which I had last seen on the flight from
JFK-LHR back in May.

Closer to JFK the crew came around with the infamous:
Pre-Arrival Beverage
Chilled sparkling water with a fresh citrus garnish.

I don’t know how much longer this will be on the menu as they never seem to have much of a take up on this offer. I did though.

We landed at 14:17 and I made my way down to the immigrations hall which was pretty empty. I joined the short queue for aliens and was soon being ushered into the US. Well not exactly ushered as the immigration computers were on a go slow. I was asked the usual questions and had the four prints of my right hand checked. I was recognised as a good egg after this and didn’t require any further printing.
I then stood and waited as man typed and waited and waited and waited and waited. He eventually said to me there is something wrong with their system. I said as long as there is nothing wrong with me. He laughed and said no you are fine it is just really slow today. Eventually he got the response and stamped my BP and card and stapled it to my passport page and sent me on my way.

No checked bags meant a beeline to customs were I was sent on out the door. I proceeded upstairs to the check-in area and went to the fast track security queue on the left. It wasn’t so fast today and the slow track would have been a better option.

Once past the boarding pass and passport check I was quickly able to find a machine with a short queue and did the mini strip tease and took out my baggie of liquid explosives, err deodorant, shave cream, toothpaste etc. Once through the archway unscathed I collected my chattels and proceeded to get dressed again.

With a sense of déjà vu I made my way up to the Flagship Lounge with my new BP and LHR-JFK BP in hand. The agent gave me a key into the inner sanctum that is the Flagship lounge. I said oh you have finished the renovations and she confirmed.

Inside the lounge I gave my BP to the inner agent who swiped it though her computer. I expected her to ask me to show my LHR-JFK BP but it was not requested. Perhaps the fact the BP has been issued in London was enough for her.

Inside I checked out the “new” lounge. Umm it looks the same to me. What on earth did they do?

Oh well, next up a shower was in order as I was all hot and sticky.
I asked the agent if I could grab a shower and she took my BP and gave me a key to the shower rooms.
After a quick, cooling shower I emerged into the lounge to suck down a Sam Adams and await my next flight.

The lounge has self service, alcohol including beers, wine and sparkling wines along with coffee, tea, juices and soft drinks. A selection of sprits and mixers was also available. There were biscuits and pastries along with some vegetables, cheese and sandwiches and some hot finger foods.

After a couple of hours in the lounge it was time to mosey on down to gate 1 where my next chariot awaited.
Boarding commenced in the usual AA efficient style allowing First passenger to enter first and then the Group boarding process by row number.
I didn’t see most of that as I was on down the ramp with the first few First passengers.

Flight AA257 JFK-LAS Seat 5F
Aircraft: 757-200
Departure time: 16:50

I said hello to the purser who responded in kind!!

I found my seat stowed my bag and sat down watching the civilians pile on past me to that part of the plane that I have almost forgotten about.

On the ground OJ, water and bubbles were passed around and I decided to break with tradition… nah I grabbed a plastic of bubbly.

There were 4 seats free in the antiquated First cabin when they closed up and the captain announced a flight time of 5 hours and 7 minutes. Old they may be but there is plenty of space for legs and shoulders and such. The lack of a headrest is the worst part about these old seats on the 757s.

The crew member came down to the back of the cabin to take orders for dinner again following the FEBO process. There was a choice of cheese tortellini or steak with mushroom sauce.

We pushed back at 16:47 just ahead of schedule. We taxied a long time to the other end of the field before the captain put the pedal to metal and those oversized 757 babies had us off the ground in no time. I do like the take off in a 757.

After we hit cruising altitude the crew went about the business of serving up drinks with some rather well done warm nuts. I opted for a scotch and dry for this part of the journey. This was replenished when I had drained the glass and the nuts bowl also found itself full again.

A while later the trolley was wheeled out and the meal service began from the front of the cabin. The trays were plated with the requested meal handed out with the salad on them and an offer of brown or white cheese rolls was made. I was also asked if I would like some wine with my dinner.

I decided to grab a glass of the red, a Shiraz, they had on board.

The meal was quite tasty and my only criticism would be that the meat was a little over cooked for my liking but was nice none the less.

More bread and wine was offered during the meal and my glass was never empty.
After the tray was removed I was asked if I could down a bowl of ice cream. I said why not.

I also ordered a glass of Baileys to accompany the sweet treat.

During the flight they had a movie playing on the overhead monitors. I decided to stick with my iPod as my IFE.
Drinks were offered several times during the remainder of the flight and the crew were a visible presence at most times.

We landed at 19:00 in Las Vegas and I made my way off the plane thanking the excellent crew on the way. I walked on down to the transit system that ferried me across to the main terminal building where I went in search of transportation to my hotel.

I eventually found the shuttle bus area to the left side and bought a ticket. I waited a while before the bus arrived and then longer as they didn’t want to go out with 1 passenger. Well gee thanks Greyline I know who I won’t be using next time.

Eventually we left with 6 other passengers on board who all showed up in quick succession. We stopped at MGM and the next stop was mine at Planet Hollywood. The driver said he was supposed to go to Bellagio before this but as I had been so patient he decided to drop me off first.

I made my up to reception and was checked in to my upgraded suite with a view out over the strip. I was able to sit and watch the Bellagio fountains do their thing from my bathroom and bedroom windows.
The room was large but not particularly palatial and was really starting to show its age.
I did intend to wander around the hotel but sleep caught up with my and I crashed by 10 pm local time.

Stay tuned for a day of lounging in the next instalment.

Another excellent read Thanks!

FYI AA and Virgin have swapped at T3. Whereas Virgin used to leave from the new T3 extension at gates 32-42, and AA from the other end of the "T", it is mostly the other way round now. So expect more of your AA flights to leave from that part of the terminal!

Deary, deary, me and I thought you'd packed this malarkey in as well.

Great report as usual however I have to say you came over as being a bit grumpy or was it just because you weren't travelling in first?

Part 5 LAS - JFK - YVR

The Photos

On leaving the aircraft on my inbound flight there was an announcement requesting that people get to LAS two hours prior to departure as the queues are normally quite long. With this in mind, even though I was in First, I was prepared for an early start.

Not as early as my body clock was trying to tell me though. I woke at 04:00 and pottered around listening to music until 05:00 when I had a shower, dressed and packed my bag to leave.

I went downstairs and checked-out and made my way out to grab a taxi to the airport.

The journey was swift at that hour of the morning and I was at LAS by 05:45 for a 07:50 flight.
There was already a queue at the check-in desks so I decided to use the SSCI machine which was a quick and painless exercise. I then made my way upstairs and to the other end of the terminal where security for the D gates resides.

I walked to the signs for D gate passengers and briefly joined the long, long queue to security. I thought there must be a fast track somewhere and left the queue and went in search of.

The First class line did exist but you need to follow the signs for C gates.

Once in this queue I was lined up for a few minutes before the passport and BP checker did her thing. A TSA lassie was encouraging people to head up to the other end of the line of x-ray machines and locate the shortest queue, which I did.

Again I got stuck behind ill-prepared people who were faffing about getting things out of their bags. Eventually the guy in front of me and I jumped ahead of them as we were ready to go. I was through security quickly after this and I made my way down to the transit system to take me back to the infield terminal and the D gates.

I noted that the Continental Presidents Club was a couple of gates away from my assigned departure gate which was perfect.
I went up to the next floor and entered the lounge handing over my Priority Pass to gain access. I chatted to the agent for a bit enquiring about the number of PP users they get in there. She said they do get a few and she likes them because there are no complex rules attached and if you have the card you get in – simple.
She explained what was available in the lounge and wished me a pleasant stay.
I wandered inside and found a seat by the window overlooking some of the D gates and out onto the apron.

The lounge had a manned bar, a self service area where you could get some fruit, muffins, bagels, cornflakes and coffee and tea. Fruit juices were available from the bar. There was also wifi available if you had a laptop. All of which were complimentary.

I grabbed a bagel and ran it through the toaster to get it remotely brown, a coffee and some grapefruit juice from the bar which would serve as my pre-breakfast snack.
After waiting just over an hour I walked down to the gate where they had already started boarding. I walked straight up and onto the aircraft.

Flight AA258 LAS-JFK Seat 2A
Aircraft: 757-200
Departure time: 07:50

I boarded through door 2L and turned left to go back to seat 2A. A crew member was kneeling on my seat and chatting to the toddler in seat 3A. I stowed my bag and let the crew chat for a while. She eventually noticed me and said I suppose this is your seat. I said it was. I also said I wondered if you were going to be the crew on this flight. It was the same crew as the outbound flight which was fine by me as they were very good.

We chatted a bit about where they stay and why I was doing a crazy turnaround like this. The things we do for miles!

I took my seat and a while later the crew were out with trays of OJ or water. I opted for the juice to start the flight with.

After everyone was on board the captain announced that there would be a ATC hold as JFK was clogged up and they were not going to let us leave for another hour and twenty. The good news was we were able to sit at the gate for 30 minutes of that. The crew handed out more drinks on the ground and showed the safety demo.

We closed up and pushed back at around 08:30 and moved out to a holding pen for a further 40 minutes.
At 09:12 we headed out to the runway and made our way into the desert sky. The flying time was announced as 4 hours and 37 minutes. We flew out over Hoover dam and I spent most of the first part of the flight with my head glued to the window watching the mountains of red rock turn more green and the flatten out into more habitable lands. We also flew over Zion and Bryce Canyon on our way north to New York.

A drinks round was made after we levelled out and I opted for that good old morning favourite of a bloody Mary. After the drinks service a hot towel was handed out and another drink was made for me.

The trolley then made its way down the aisle serving breakfast. The choices this morning were a cheese omelette with potato and bacon or pancakes. I went with the omelette option.
On the tray was a plate of fruit along with my main and I was offered a biscuit or bagel.

The breakfast was quite substantial and very nice and for me at least was preferable to the lardy BA J breakfast of the greasy fry up.

After breakfast was cleared away I sat back and listened to my music and did the Sudoku in the AA magazine. Again there was a movie playing on the overhead screens but I wasn’t interested in it.

Drinks were offered several times during the flight and again the tireless crew were visible the whole time.

We made up time on the way to JFK and landed at 16:20 which was only 17 minutes late according to the schedule.

I thanked the crew on my way out and made my way out of T8 and over to T7 in the hopes of getting a BP for my next flight. But alas BA and QF were unable to print a BP for me – so much for OneWorld!!

Plan B. I hopped the sky train again over to terminal four and found a lovely LX agent who pointed me in the direction of their lounge. I walked in and pulled out my Priority Pass again. She asked me for my BP and I explained check-in didn’t open for another 2 hours. She was OK with this and informed me that the lounge closed at 20:00.

Inside the J section of the lounge I found several seating areas, two bar areas with sprits, wines and coffee machines, a food bar with cold and hot food available, an area with computers (there was also wifi) and toilet and shower facilities.

I found a section to plonk myself down in and grabbed a Sam Adams to sup on. The lounge looks out over the gate that LX use as well as VX and LY.

After a while I decided I needed a snack to keep me going until my main meal that would be later that night on my next flight. I grabbed some pasta and chicken and some veggies to tide me over.

I wandered back up to my spot and waited some more until around 06:45 when I left the lounge and skytrained it back to T7.

The CX premium desks were not operating and the IB agent suggested I try the Y desks around the corner that open earlier.
I did that and the agent said to me are you in First I said yes. She called over another agent and they eventually sorted out what was wrong. She said there was another passenger with exactly the same name as me on this flight. I asked where they were sitting and she smiled and said 55J. I said thank god you found the right me.

She wished me a pleasant trip and sent me over to security. The queues weren’t too long and I was through relatively quickly without any numpties in front of me this time.

I then went up to the BA Terraces First lounge and handed over my CX printed invite.
Inside it was still the same lacklustre excuse of a lounge as I had experienced last year. The bar was well stocked and the champagne was Piper H Brut.

There were some sandwiches there which I didn’t see anyone take. Probably because they were chicken with anchovy butter or curried prawn.

Here I was sitting in my third lounge for the day and still another 3 hours until I my flight was due to leave. But I was picking up the AONE again and into the welcoming bosom of CX.

I grabbed a packet of sunchips and a glass of bubbly and sat down. I surfed for a bit on one of the PCs available. I sat down some more. I walked around the lounge. I sat down some more. An announcement was made that due to Air Force one being on the ground at JFK all inbound aircraft were an hour late arriving and this would have a knock on effect to the departure times of my CX flight and the last BA flight out for the day. A collective groan was issued from the passengers in the lounge.

So I waited some more and sat some more and drank copious amounts of dah dah sparkling water!

Eventually at 23:15 a boarding announcement was made for my flight and I moved on down to the gate. There was the usual efficient fast track lane to the left and I was able to walk up to the very short queue just as they started to board.

Flight CX889 JFK-YVR Seat 1A
Aircraft: 777-300
Departure time: 22:40

I boarded through door 2L and made my way to my seat. I stowed my bag under the guest seat and sat myself down. A crew member appeared and introduced herself and asked if I would like a drink. Now we are talking. I asked for Champagne please.

A glass was bought out and the bottle of Krug was presented before me before the glass was filled.

A pair of PJs and amenity kit were soon delivered to my seat. The amenity kit was Bally braded and contained Acca Cappa goodies inside.

The captain came on the blower and announced a flight time of 5 hours and 9 minutes and apologised for the delay and said they would do their best to make up time.

The ISM came by and introduced herself to me and the F purser also introduced herself. She also asked me if I flew this route often as she thought she recognised me.

Whilst on the ground my bubbly was re-filled 3 times, a bottle of water was handed to me and a hot towel presented on a nice little lacquer platter.

We pushed back at 23:50 when the captain then announced a huge queue for takeoff and that he expected we would be airborne in an hour!!

Sure enough it was 00:50 by the time those big 777 engines roared into life and we were hurtling down the runway.
On the way down the runway I counted 13 planes all queued up waiting to take off.

The menus were handed out in the air and a fresh glass of bubbly was delivered along with some cashews.

Cloud Nine
A refreshing combination of Vodka, Cointreau and Sprite with a refreshing touch of lemon flavour.

Being the supreme oinker that I am I ordered the starter, salad and the soup and was going to follow up with the tenderloin.

My table was set and the starter presented along with a bread basket containing various breads including the ultra delicious garlic bread.

The starter was nice and fresh and was replaced with the salad which in turn was replaced with the lovely hot soup. I have said t before and I will say it again I am a sucker for soup on a plane.

I was already feeling full and regretting my overly ambitious meal order when the steak appeared.
It was beautifully cooked and the accompaniments and sauce were excellent. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish it and neither could I attempt cheese or dessert.

I did manage a peppermint tea along with a couple of pralines though. I had been drinking Krug throughout the meal and feeling decidedly tired and started to doze off. The crew member had said she would make up my bed for me and to let her know. Sleep got the better of me until the call of nature got the better of the sleep.

When I returned from the bathroom my bed had been made up for me by the ever vigilant crew member. I was then out to it for a good couple of hours.

I awoke just over 40 minutes out of YVR and went to the bathroom again to splash some water on my face. On return to my seat I was given a hot towel and asked if I would like anything to drink. I declined.

We landed at 03:00 and made our way to the gate. The ISM announced that all through passengers were to stay on the aircraft during the short layover.

I and 2 of the other 4 inhabitants of the F cabin left the aircraft at this stage.
I walked down to immigrations and straight up to a free agent and said good morning. He processed me into Canada and asked me if I had a return ticked out of Canada. I said do you need to see it or is a Yes good enough. He said that depends on your answer. I said I did and he was happy with that.

I went on down to customs handed over my form and made my way out to the taxi queue. My stop for the night would be the four points at Richmond only a few minutes from the airport. They do a shuttle service but you need to call and wait for them to come and collect you. I decided to forego the free ride and pay for a taxi and get to the hotel 20 minutes earlier.
I was checked in quickly, made my way to my upgraded room and was doing the teeth, toilet and bed routine by 03:35.

Stay tuned for one more report before another hiatus – I do need to get back to the UK.
