It actually worries me that the crew would suggest this as this is usually a very big nono. The seatbelt is for your own restraint and takes your weight in case of a sudden deceleration, can you imagine having a toddler stuck between you and that belt. Your weight would be crushing whatever, or in this case whomever was between you and the seatbelt.
This is why they provide the infant seat belts that loop around your own.

Although I do bet that the other passengers were happy, but honestly... if you're already on final the flight's not going to last that long anymore anyway.
