Champagnes and Wines

Champagnes

Dom Pérignon 1999
Few wines have achieved the mythical status of Cuvée Dom Pérignon. Moët et Chandon made their first Cuvée Dom Pérignon 70 years ago, a champagne that is always from the finest Grands Crus and always carries a vintage date. The 1999 is both fresh on the nose and full on the palate, a triumph of ethereal elegance.

Krug Grande Cuvee
Founded in Reims in 1843, the House of Krug is now managed by the 5th and 6th generations of the Krug family. Rigorous selection and care go into every detail of the “multi-vintage” Grand Cuvée, which offers a magical combination of aromatic complexity, power and finesse with a long, lingering finish. Krug is the ultimate experience in champagne.

White Wines

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Marlborough
Cloudy Bay is the definitive New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Since its first vintage in 1986, Cloudy Bay has excited wine drinkers the world over with its racy freshness and zingy flavours. Made by winemaker Kevin Judd, this wine well deserves its cult status. Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s most successful and distinctive wine style and has almost single-handedly established “the land of the long white cloud” on the international wine stage.

Meursault Les Clous 2005 Bouchard Pere et Fils
Meursault is one of the most famous of all white Burgundies and the Les Clous vineyard that is 47% owned by Bouchard Pere et Fils, lies just above the village’s top Premier Crus. Pale gold with green tints, with the classic Meursault aroma of white flowers and hazelnuts, this wine has ripe Chardonnay fruit on the palate, a hint of oak and a firm finish. 2005 was the best vintage in Burgundy for many years and the white wines are beautiful now.

Red Wines

Château Cos d’Estournel 1999 Saint-Estephe
With 65 hectares of superbly placed vineyards that adjoin those of Château Lafite-Rothschild in neighbouring Pauillac, Cos d’Estournel is one of Bordeaux’s most famous estates. The wine is known for its intense, slightly spicy Cabernet Sauvignon fruit blended with a high proportion of Merlot to provide richness and roundness. 1999 was a fine vintage for Bordeaux which is now showing its true quality.

Mr Riggs The Gaffer Shiraz 2005 McLaren Value, Australia
Mr Riggs also known as Ben, has been making wine in McLaren Vale for over 21 years. His Mr Riggs Shiraz is one of the most exciting in the region. It is rich, ripe and full bodied and despite being matured for 12 months in French Oak barrels has a fruit purity that fully expresses the region in which it was grown. The wine is named in honour of Ben’s great-great-great-grandfather who was known as The Gaffer, a colloquial term for the boss or foreman.

Port

Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port Portugal
This magnificent port is made from wines of the very highest quality from Graham’s estates in the Douro region of northern Portugal. The black-red of the young wines takes on a light red/tawny colour, while the nose shows raisiny fruit with hints of orange peel and spice. On the palate it is rich and nutty, with a wonderful warmth of flavour and lingering aftertaste.

Champagnes and Wines

Champagnes

Charles Heidsieck
Of the three Champagne Houses based in the historic city of Reims that bear the name Heidsieck, Charles Heidsieck is the most famous, being the oldest and the largest and having coined the name “Champagne Charlie”. A perfect blend of the Chardonnay grape for elegance, Pinot Noir for body and a little Pinot Meunier for spiciness, this is a marvellously expressive Champagne, lively on the nose, biscuity and creamy on the palate with rounded, dry finish.

White Wines

Wild Rock “The Infamous Goose” Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Marlborough, New Zealand
The Marlborough region in New Zealand’s South Island produces some of the world’s most exciting and distinctive Sauvignon Blanc. The style is leafy, racy and highly distinctive. Wild Rock is a youthful modern wine company headed by highly respected viticulturalist and Master of Wine Steve Smith and winemaker Matt Murphy. By way of clarification Goose is the nickname of the man who grew the grapes.

[b]Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay 2006 South Australia
Australia has a reputation for rich and oaky Chardonnay. This stereotype has been challenged of late by the evolution of a new modern style of Chardonnay. These wines, generally grown in cooler regions, are better balanced with less overt oak and higher natural acidity. Wynns is such a wine. Made by Sue Hodder, one of Australia’s most respected female winemakes, Wynns was founded in 1891 and is synonymous with the Coonawarra region. Sealed in screw cap to eliminate cork taint.

Red Wines

Heartland Shiraz 2005
Shiraz is Australia’s most famous grape variety. Whilst the traditional style is well established, a new modern take on Shiraz has emerged focusing more on fruit purity than heavy oak ageing. Heartland Shiraz is such a wine. Heartland is a partnership of local wine identities with complimentary skills in viticulture, winemaking and marketing. The wines are made by cult winemaker Ben Glaetzer who was Young Winemaker of the Year in 2004. This vibrant red wine has great concentration and spice. The palate has a wonderful velvety texture and suppleness and successfully combines power with softness.

Chateau Fonreaud 2002 Listrac Medo
The splendid 18th century chateau of the Chanfreau family occupies the highest elevation in the Medoc and dominates the 42 hectares of gravel soil vineyards that are classified Cru Bourgeois Superieur, a ranking just below that of the world-famous Crus Classes. A fine Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend, with just a touch of the spicy Petit Verdot grape, this is a classic Listrac : bright carmine colour, a hint of blackcurrants on the nose, velvety smooth on the palate with a balanced dry finish. The 2002 vintage is now at its best.

Elderton Shiraz 2004 Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley is known internationally for classic “Aussie” Shiraz. These wines are rich and full-bodied with a characteristic soft finish and mocca flavours. Elderton is a small family owned company with an excellent reputation for its reds. This wine, made from old vines from the warmer valley floor, was aged in a mixture of American and French oak barrels and is a fine example of traditional Barossa Shiraz.

Port

Dow 2001 Late Bottled Vintage Port Portugal
A Late Bottled Vintage Port, usually shortened to LBV, is Port from a single, high quality vintage, bottled after four to five years spent maturing in large oak barrels, or “pipes” as they are known in the Douro. Deep ruby in colour, with all the spice, bramble fruit and concentration typical of a fine Port, and a warm, smooth sweetness of the finish, this LBV is one of the highest quality.
