Champagne

Piper Heidsieck 1999
Piper Heidsieck, known simply as “Piper” to its many admirers, epitomizes the zest and gaiety of the social scene for which Champagne is so perfectly suited. From the excellent 1999 vintage, this is a superb blend of the two greatest Champagne grapes : 60% Pinot Noir for ripeness and body with 40% Chardonnay for elegance and finesse. Matured for over five years in Piper’s deep chalk cellars in Reims, it has now reached perfection.

White Wines

2005 Mount Nelson Sauvignon Blanc
New Zealand has an international reputation for it’s Sauvignon Blanc, in particular the herbaceous, ultra-fresh wines from Marlborough region. The price of land has soared as many new investors rush to be part of the Marlborough phenomenon. One of the most famous being Italy’s Antinori family. Mount Nelson is made from their Campo di Sasso vineyard. This wine successfully captures the vibrant fruit character and individuality of the region.

2004 Hattenheimer Schutzenhaus Riesling Kabinett Balthasar Ress
The Hattenheim vineyards in the heart of Germany’s Rheingau wine region were classified “Erstes-Gewachs” of First Growth in 1999 and the Schutzenhaus slopes face south-west to produce delicate wines of great elegance. 2004 was a superb vintage for Rheingau Riesling and this wine won the German Trophy in the 2006 International Wine Challenge.

Red Wines

Chateau Cissac 1998 Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc
Cissac is one of the Medoc’s finest Cru Bourgeois. The high proportion (75%) of Cabernet Sauvignon produces a wine with a brilliant deep carmine colour and an aroma of cedar wood over blackcurrants. 1998 was a very good vintage that produced classically firm clarets that needed time for the tannins to soften. At eight years old, this wine is now in full bloom.

Chateau Beau-Site 2000 Saint-Estephe
Beau-Site (which in French means beautiful site) is a fine 35 hectare vineyard superbly situated near to the famous Chateau Calon-Segur, on similarly stony soils high on the Saint-Estephe plateau. The vines – 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot – are very old and the style of wine they produce is concentrated yet elegant. The 2000 vintage is one of the greatest in recent times, on a par with 1990 and 2005, the wines showing a deep colour and opulent fruit that with maturity provides the greatest pleasure.

Churton Marlborough 2003 Pinot Noir
New Zealand is home to some of the world’s most exciting Pinot Noir wines. The wines have intense colour, exuberant fruit characters and silky mouth feel. In food terms this style is well suited to a wide range of different cuisines. The 2003 Churton from Marlborough in the South Island is made by Sam Weaver and is an excellent example of this vibrant style.

Port

Dow 2001 Late Bottled Vintage Port Portugal
A Late Bottled Vintage Port, usually shortened to LBV, is Port from a single, high quality vintage, bottled after four to five years spent maturing in large oak barrels, or “pipes” as they are known in the Douro. Deep ruby in colour, with all the spice, bramble fruit and concentration typical of a fine Port, and a warm, smooth sweetness of the finish, this LBV is one of the highest quality.

Champagne

Dom Pérignon 1999
Few wines have achieved the mythical status of Cuvée Dom Pérignon. Moët et Chandon made their first Cuvée Dom Pérignon 70 years ago, a champagne that is always from the finest Grands Crus and always carries a vintage date. The 1999 is both fresh on the nose and full on the palate, a triumph of ethereal elegance.

White Wines

Chablis Premier Cru Les Beauroys 2000 Domaine Laroche
There are 17 Premiers Crus in Chablis, of which Les Beauroys is the smallest at just 6 hectares, half owned by Domaine Laroche. The vineyard is south-facing on Kimmeridgian chalk soil which produces the finest wines. With a delicate bouquet reminiscent of cream and hazelnuts, the fruit flavours are long lasting with a firm, minerally finish. 2000 was a superb vintage for Chablis and this wine is now at its peak.

Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaumes “Old Vines” 2003 Domaine Laroche
Les Fourchaumes is the largest and most famous of all 17 Premiers Crus in Chablis, with a total of 98 hectares on a soil of Kimmeridgian limestone. The Laroche vineyards are exposed south-west and west, which get the advantage of the warm afternoon sun and the vines are over 30 years old. Pale gold, the wine has a lovely bouquet, redolent of summer meadows with a touch of cream, leading to a mouthful of buttery fruit backed by a steely and impressive structure which has enabled it to mature magnificently.

Dr Loosen 2004 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese
The Wurzgarten (spicy garden) vineyard outside the village of Urzig produces the Mosel’s finest wines from its highly terraced slopes : pale in colour with a charming aroma of citrus fruits and white peaches, refreshingly fruit with both a natural sweetness and lively acidity. 2004, a superb vintage with great complexity and length, is perfect now.

Red Wines

Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1999 Saint-Estephe
With 65 hectares of superbly placed vineyards that adjoin those of Château Lafite-Rothschild in neighbouring Pauillac, Cos d’Estournel is one of Bordeaux’s most famous estates. The wine is known for its intense, slightly spicy Cabernet Sauvignon fruit blended with a high proportion of Merlot to provide richness and roundness. 1999 was a fine vintage for Bordeaux which is now showing its true quality.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre 1999 Saint-Julien
Previously over-shadowed by its neighbours Leoville-Barton and Leovill-Las Cases, this estate has seen a remarkable renaissance since 1989 and has reclaimed pride of place amongst the Saint-Julien Second Growths. The excellent 1999, one of the stars of the vintage, is rich in plumy black fruit with opulence and complexity on the palate and a rounded yet firm finish.

Morey-Saint-Denis 1999 Joseph Drouhin
The commune of Morey-Saint-Denis is sandwiched between the more famous communes of Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and Chambolle-Musigny to the south. Not benefiting from their reputation, the producers have had to try harder and have generally made very good wines. The soil is limestone chalk and clay, and the wines combined both the sturdiness of Gevrey-Chambertin and the suppleness of Chambolle-Musigny. They have a characteristic nose of wild cherries and often a touch of licorice and leather on the palate, that harmonises well with the ripe Pinot fruit.

Beaune Les Avaux Premier Cru 2002
Bourchard Pere et Fils are the largest owners of Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Cote d’Or, the centre of the Burgundy region. The historic town of Beaune is surrounded by some of the most prestigious sites, amongst the Les Avaux, whose wines open up early and mature well. 2002 was an excellent vintage, showing a bright cherry colour with aromas of strawberry-dominated red berry fruit, a bright smoothness of the palate and an elegant finish, for fine Burgundy is the lightest of the world’s great red wines.

Port

Dow’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port Portugal
Dow possesses some of the finest vineyards in the Upper Douro and is one of the oldest names in the history of Port, dating back to 1798. The beautifully balanced Tawny Port is carefully matured for over 20 years in wooden barrels known as “pipes” before being bottled. Light tawny in colour, showing mature raisiny fruit aromas with hints of honey. It is on the palate rich and nutty, with a wonderful balance, a clean crisp finish and a soft lingering aftertaste.

Grahams 20 Year Old Tawny Port Portugal
This magnificent port is made from wines of the very highest quality from Graham’s estates in the Douro region of northern Portugal, that are aged in seasoned oak casks of 534 litres (known as “pipes”) until their peak of maturity is reached after twenty years. The black-red of the young wines takes on a light red/tawny colour, while the nose shows raisiny fruit with hints of orange peel and spice, on the palate it is rich and nutty, with a wonderful warmth of flavour and lingering aftertaste.

The 1999 is both fresh on the nose and full on the palate, a triumph of ethereal elegance.

Krug Grande Cuvée
Founded in Reims in 1843, the House of Krug is now managed by the 5th and 6th generations of the Krug family. Rigorous selection and care go into every detail of the “multi-vintage” Grand Cuvée, which offers a magical combination of aromatic complexity, power and finesse with a long, lingering finish. Krug is the ultimate experience in champagne.

Château Pichon-Longueville Comtess De Lalande 1998 Pauillac
The larger of the two Second Growth Pichon-Longueville estates produces the most elegant wines in Pauillac after the First Growth Château Lafite-Rothschild, whose seductive suppleness is due to the high percentage of Merlot in the vineyards. 1998 was an excellent vintage, where smoky, cedary aromas combine with black cherry and blackcurrant fruits in a complex finish.

White Wines

2004 Hattenheimer Schutzenhaus Riesling Kabinett Balthasar Ress
The Hattenheim vineyards in the heart of Germany’s Rheingau wine region were classified “Erstes-Gewachs” of First Growth in 1999 and the Schutzenhaus slopes face south-west to produce delicate wines of great elegance. 2004 was a superb vintage for Rheingau Riesling and this wine won the German Trophy in the 2006 International Wine Challenge.

Montagny 1er Cru 2004
The well-known white wine from the Cote-Chalonnaise in southern Burgundy : pale yellow with light green tints, a touch of hazelnuts on the nose, rounded and pleasantly fruity on the palate with an attractive dry finish, this is best at between two and four years old.

Serrata Belguardo 2003 igt Maremma Toscana
A superb blend of the Chianti’s Sangiovese grape and Bordeaux’s Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is from what is fast becoming the most exciting wine growing region in southern Tuscany. A lovely wine with deep black cherry colour. Fresh crushed berry fruit on the nose dominated by blackcurrants, succulent flavours on the palate, from the warm 2003 vintage, with an elegantly dry finish.

Gourmet Coffees

Charles Heidsieck “Mise en Cave 2003”
Of the three Champagne Houses based in the historic city of Reims that bear the name Heidsieck, Charles Heidsieck is the most famous, being the oldest and the largest and having coined the name “Champagne Charlie”. A perfect blend of the Chardonnay grape for elegance, Pinot Noir for body and a little Pinot Meunier for spiciness, based on the 2002 vintage, bottled and “mise en cave” in 2003, this is a marvellously expressive Champagne, lively on the nose, biscuity and creamy on the palate with rounded, dry finish.

Moondah Brook Chardonnay 2005 Western Australia
Moondah Brook is situated in the Swan Valley near Perth but sources its grapes from the best grape growing areas throughout Western Australia. This wine is a blend of Chardonnay from Margaret River, Mt Barker and Pemberton and was made by highly acclaimed winemaker Rob Bowan. Pale straw in colour, the wine has restrained but pure varietals flavours subtly seasoned by barrel fermentation and ageing. It is an excellent example of the crisp, less heavy Chardonnay styles now being made in Australia.
