This will be long, so I'll do it in chunks. First, some background. I love to travel, and wanted to take a long segment/ mileage run. I wanted to fly eastbound in F, and back in J. So I purchaced three tickets.
1) AC: LAX-YVR in Y
2) LH/ SQ/BD: YVR-FRA-AMS-MAN-LHR-MAD in J (upgraded YVR-FRA with UA miles to F)
3)BD/UA: MAD-LHR-IAD-LAX in Y (UA segments upped to J with SWU).
I will rate each section one to five points. At the end will be total points for the airline.
Here we go!
AC#3394 LAX-YVR
1)Check in:
No problems checking in at LAX Terminal 2. Line at the *G counter was emtpy, and I was processed in no time. I asked about an opperational upgrade, but as the flight was not full, I could not get one. The agent was very nice and made sure I had the seat of choice (12a). Line for security took 15 minutes. 4.5 points
2)Lounge:
I really like the Maple Leaf Lounge at LAX. Packaged cookies, fruit, and nice array of juice and soda. For those who like alcohol, there was plenty to be had. I was not all that interested! 5 points
3)Boarding:
Aircraft was a 737-200. Hadn't been on one of those in a long time! Flight boarded on time. My window seat was comfortable, as I was behind the exit row (with no window seat in front of me). 5 points
4)Flight:
Smooth flight. But the agents were a bit, well, I felt like I was at Fenway Park. When the meals came, the FA's went through the cabin announcing, "Pasta, chicken? Pasta, Chicken?" I chose the chicken, which was really aweful. Actually, it was not aweful. Just tasteless. 2 points
5)Arrival:
YVR approach is so beautiful. Landing was spectacular, and we got to the gate in no time. As I deplaned, I asked the gate agent about international connections. He directed me to go through customs. But I suggested that there must be a transit option. He called his supervisor, and realized that there was indeed an option. So I followed the signs. I looked down to the immigrations hall. It was a mob, and I felt very good having avoided it. 3 points
Total: 19.5 points.
On to the Maple Leaf Lounge to check in for my next flight! Stay tuned for part two.

Part II: YVR-FRA(LH)
1 and 2) Check in/ Lounge:
After my first leg, I went to the MLL in YVR (as there was no Senator Lounge). I presented my LH ticket and asked the agents about check in. The agents were wonderful. One took my ticket, passport, and upgrade cert, walked over to the LH ticket counter (on other side of customs), and took care of my check-in while I sat and enjoyed fruit juice, cookies, and newspapers. The lounge was uncrowded and very pleasent. The agent returned with my boarding passes through to AMS. As I had another couple of hours, I decided to leave the lounge and brouse in duty free. Check in: 5 points. Lounge: 4.5 points.
3) Boarding:
Flight boarded at announced time. But First Class boarded last, as the Upper Deck was not yet ready. Once we were invited on, I eagerly went up the spiral staircase on this 747-200 and into my window seat. There are just 8 seats, and the cabin is spacious. The seats are a bit dated, but sleak and very comfy. The FA took my jacket, offered my drinks, brought around newspapers, etc. Each time she addressed me by name. The amenity kit was a let-down. Nothing unique about it. Menu is quite nice, but I'll get to that in a minute. 4.5 points.
4) The FLight:
I'll start with the menu/ food. Presentation was spectacular. A very nice menu/ wine list. The rose was a really nice touch. Here is a menu description:
Dinner:
Hors d'oeuvre
Caviar with the traditional Garnishes
Marinated Baby Lobster enhanced by Lemon Salsa
Pepperred Loin of Lamb filled with Leek offered with Mint Chutney, Yellow Bell Pepper, grilled Mushrooms and Couscous
(I chose the Caviar).
Salad/ Bread etc.
Entrees:
Dijon-crusted Tenderloin of Beef complemented by Carmelized Onion Sauce, Bean Stew and Olive Oil mashed potatoes with Chives.
Alaskan Snow Crab Cakes served with Hot and Sour Sauce, Baby Bok Choy, Carrots and stir-fried Egg Noodles
Butternut Squash Pasta accompanied by a spicy Basil Salsa, Sun-dried Tomatoes and Parmesan Shavings
Pork Tenderloin Medallions featured with a chunky Vegetable Coulis, sauteed Zucchini and Onions and Gnocchi.
(I chose the Beef, which was good, but not delicious).
Cheese and Dessert:
Big cheese selection!
Blueberry Cheesecake
Peach Cream Cake
Fine Chocolates
(I had the cheese and chocolates)
Breakfast was a delight, with the regluar joices, hot drinks, rolls, and muffins. I also had a choice of scrambled eggs or a frittata.
I slept about 4 hours on the flight in the nice sweater LH presented us.
4.5 points.
5) Arrival:
On time landing. I went to the Senators Lounge for a well needed shower. A nice facility, but not as fresh as Swissair's F class arrivals facility in Zurich. Still, a shower is a shower. It was here that I realized I had left my sleep sweater on the plane. I ran back and found a gate agent who escorted me back on. Alas, cleaning crews had already swept the plane, and my long sought-after momento was gone. I have already written LH to inquire about obtaining a relpacement.
4 points.
Total: 22.5 points
