Birthday Getaway/Mileage Run from New York – Tokyo via Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific

Before going any further, this is just my 2nd trip report ever, so once again please bear with me if details are lacking since I’m just starting to learn how to create trip reports.

Since it was my 20th birthday, I decided to go to Tokyo for quick getaway and mileage run. As always, I choose Cathay Pacific Airways.

I would like to thank FT members SFO777 for helping me out with my trip reports and olybeast for giving me the idea of getting pictures signed by the crew. Cheers

For the New York – Hong Kong sector, I was originally booked in Economy Class. But since it was my birthday and I was a Diamond member, it was a good gesture of them to upgrade me to Business Class. For the Hong Kong – Tokyo sector, I have originally booked it as Business Class.

1. Cathay Pacific flight CX 889
New York (JFK) – Vancouver (YVR) First Sector

2. Cathay Pacific flight CX 889
Vancouver (YVR) – Hong Kong (HKG) Second Sector

3. Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX 520
Hong Kong (HKG) – Tokyo (NRT)

4. Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX 505
Tokyo (NRT) - Hong Kong (HKG)

5. Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX 840
Hong Kong (HKG) – New York (JFK

1. Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX 889
New York (JFK) – Hong Kong (HKG) via Vancouver (YVR)

Cathay Pacific has 3 flights daily to New York. 2 nonstop in the morning and afternoon hours and 1 stop via Vancouver, Canada during the evening hours. A 4th flight is expected to start later this month due to high demand. I particularly chose this route with a stop because currently this is the only flight that departs during the evening hours. I feel more refreshed as I arrive in Hong Kong in the morning hours. That will change with the additional flight that will start later this month.

First Sector JFK-YVR
Departure Date – March 7, 2011
Arrival Date – March 8, 2011 (Next Day Arrival)
Aircraft – Boeing 777-300ER
Registration - B-KPH
New York departure terminal and gate - Terminal 7 Gate 4
Vancouver arrival gate – D55
Seat Number – 22A (Business Class)
Scheduled Departure Time – 22:00
Scheduled Arrival Time – 0:55+1
Flying Time – 5:21
Distance – 2442 Miles

My seat for both sectors of the flight

Legroom and ottoman

A few minutes after takeoff from JFK

View of the cabin minutes after takeoff

Complimentary bottled water which was a nice touch

Cocktail & Meal Service

Warm almonds and a glass of Baileys Irish cream
For those who are used to the CX service, you can tell that the nuts serving has slightly gotten smaller

Menu for today (2 main courses and light meal option consisting of noodle soup offered)

Starter: Caesar salad with marinated prawns with garlic bread

Main course: Grilled beef tenderloin with chanterelle mushroom demi glace, chateau potatoes, green bean with carrot roll

For steak lovers, a close up picture with a hint of red.

Dessert: White chocolate mousse cake with blackberries and blackberry coulis and some fresh fruit

My favorite part of the in-flight entertainment system, the maps as we go along.

My pre-arrival drink. The usual orange juice and a mini box of pralines!

At the parking bay at Vancouver with the underbelly camera. Another favorite feature of the In-flight entertainment system

2. Second Sector YVR-HKG
Departure Date – March 8, 2011
Arrival Date – March 9, 2011 (Next Day Arrival)
Aircraft – Boeing 777-300ER
Registration - B-KPH
Vancouver departure gate – D55
Hong Kong arrival gate – 23
Seat Number – 22A (Business Class)
Scheduled Departure Time – 2:10
Scheduled Arrival Time – 7:55+1
Flying Time – 12:50
Distance – 6381 Miles

Takeoff from Vancouver:

Cocktail & Meal Service

Warm almonds and Krug. Krug is only offered in first class but since it was my birthday, the crew was delighted to offer me a glass of Krug as a good gesture! I was also offered a bottle of Krug to take home but unfortunately I declined due to fear that the bottle might break. I rather not have Krug spilled over or bits of glass everywhere. I would have gladly accepted if this was HKG-JFK.

Menu for today (2 main courses and a light meal consisting of soup offered)

Starter: Smoked salmon with seasonal salad and balsamic vinaigrette

Main course: Pan fried beef tenderloin with portabella mushroom cabernet sauce, red skin potato mash, roasted zucchini, banana squash and carrots. Once again, I chose the steak.

Another close-up of the steak with a hint of red.

Dessert: Chocolate raspberry and hazelnut cake and fresh seasonal fruit with more Krug before I hit the hay!

After I finished my meal, I freshened up and hit the hay for most of the flight. When I woke up, we were cruising over Jeju Island, South Korea and breakfast was being served.

A nice hot cup of HK style milk tea

Breakfast Menu (3 main courses offered)

Fruit platter with croissant and muffin

Main course: Scrambled egg with chive on Canadian bacon, Cajun pork sausage, Lyonnaise potatoes and grilled tomatoes.

Great…one less washroom to use

Neat report thus far. It looks like your route took you over my stomping grounds of DLH. I like the detail of the map.

3. Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX 520
Hong Kong (HKG) – Tokyo (NRT)

Departure Date – March 9, 2011
Arrival Date – March 9, 2011 (Same Day Arrival)
Aircraft – Airbus A340-300
Registration - B-HXB
Hong Kong departure gate – Gate 64
Tokyo arrival terminal and gate – Terminal 2 Gate 71
Seat Number – 19K (Business Class)
Scheduled Departure Time – 10:20
Scheduled Arrival Time – 15:20
Flying Time – 3:21
Distance – 1841 Miles

Gate 64 at HKG

The aircraft being prepared for the flight to NRT while another aircraft pushes back

My seat for the 3 hour flight to Tokyo with the usual orange juice as a pre-departure drink. This is the same exact seat as the Boeing 777-300ER and the Boeing 747-400, but since it’s an Airbus, the seats are a bit narrow.

Climbing through cloudy skies. I love these effects!

Older style maps shortly after departure from HKG

Cocktail & Meal Service

Warm almonds and traditional Japanese “otsumami” with a glass of water

Menu for today (3 main courses offered)

Starters: Jumbo scallop tataki with grilled asparagus and chili sesame mayonnaise

Mesclun salad with balsamic vinegar dressing

Nameko mushroom flavored soba noodles

Main Course: Chicken teriyaki with steamed Japanese rice and seasonal vegetables

Dessert: Cheese selection, Fresh fruit, and Hδagen-Dazs Ice cream. I declined since I was pretty much stuffed from the previous flight.

Washroom and amenities. Since this was an old aircraft compared to the new Boeing 777-300ER, the washrooms are looking a bit tatty.

Another picture signed by the wonderful crew and an extra birthday card to go along with it.^

On our way down to NRT.

Wow! Another fabulous TR!!! I'm glad you have a great flight from HKG-NRT but, it was very medium flight. It just only 3.5 hours in-flight. How is your meals? I loves to eat chicken teriyaki and it was so delicious!!! I'll try to fly on DL or CX.

Wow, great trip report Mike! You've captured the key elements of all your flights, with some really outstanding pics and videos!
Keep it up, and Happy Birthday.
But next time, take the Krug.
