I usually go for something in the back of the plane on my first leg because I worry that the plane will leave with out me and generally I have plenty of time. I go for seats on the aisle so I can get out easily if needed.
If I have a tight connection I'll sit up towards the front on the aisle. I like being as far forward as possible on the final leg of my flight so I have less time to wait to get off the plane.
1) Window/Aisle preference
2) Extra leg room (such as an exit row)
3) Close to the front of the plane
4) Neighboring seat currently unoccupied
5) Distance from the lav
6) Seat able to recline
7) Having a seat in front of you for underseat storage
8) Engine noise
9) Other?
9) in my case is the distance from bassinet seat. 'Further, the better'.
5) in my case is 'further, the better'
2, 4, 9, 1, 5, 3, 6, 7=8 if travelling whY or other non-shell seat or non-bed seat
6, 9, 4, 5, 1, 2=3=7=8 if travelling in J/F

Window/ near exit
My refrain: A window seat as far forward as possible, near the exit.
Keep it simple.
Whichever category I am flying or whatever metal that is my choice. There are so many things on a plane you can't control (screaming babies, offensive PAX, noise, poor service, lateness, noisy galleys, weather) that a window seat offers the promise of peace, calm, and sleep. Nothing else matters as much.
