I remember those boards at the old HKG airport... They always fascinated me!

A number of train stations still have them as well- they are great. The only "dread" I recall is hearing a lot of movement simultaneously- which usually indicated irregular ops

Still, it serves as an audio cue to look up and observe what change is in store. How many times have we all been lost in a book or a computer and look up only to notice your gate has been changed, or the flight has been canceled, etc. A good CSR will make an announcement, but many times passengers are left to notice it on their own. A video monitor doesn't make any noise when it changes its info. The "flapping card" boards do.

AKL Domestic has one overhead to the right of the NZ domestic check-in area.

I remember "the board" at IAD. I was sad when it went away.

A lot of movement usually just means that the flight (or train) at the top has left. Moving everything else up means changing the entire board.

I recall seeing one in Billund, Denmark . The most interesting part is that when I was there, the very first flight listed on the board was to Faroe Islands - and was delayed by 12 hours (everything else was on time)

Me too! I could watch that board riffle for hours. There is something weirdly exciting about it.. plicka-plicka-plicka-plicka-plicka-PLICK.

If I win the Publishers Clearing House I am getting one of these boards for my living room.

Think there is a huge one as you enter KUL? Also NZ domestic at AKL. Can't remember where else I have seen them.

There was a functional homage to the flapper board in an installation at MoMa NYC about a year ago. I believe it was in the modern design section, but I haven't been there recently...

I actually have a picture of the one at SIN from last month. I think it's the kind where each individual space changes so it's more flexible than the kind where the entire row flaps down and there are set number of possibilities that are complete words/number on each flap. If that makes any sense.

Edit: Double-checked. My pic from Feb is of T2
Edit2: Oopps! triple-checked. Also have a pic from T1. It appears that the airlines are on the wide flap but the numbers and letters are each individually spaces.
