How often has you luggage been lost?

I was reading another warning of lost luggage and I got to thinking how often does it actually happen to folks that check baggage often?

In my case 2 out of the last 250 flights..both times due to a changed missed connection enroute..

Which dosent seem to bad..obviously I don't check baggage when its not necessary to eliminate the possibility entirely

In the last 5 years I've only checked luggage 3 times and had the bag go missing on one of those flights (thanks US Airways). Not a scientific sampling but it just reinforces my belief that checking bags is asking for trouble.

Three times in a row flying back into ROA. Thanks US Scareways. It's like they forgot to unload the planes

Once flying back into GSO, they totally demolished my suiter. (Again US Scareways) Standing by the carousel I see my portfolio, a shirt, 2 pairs of pants, etc, all coming out singly. The last thing to come out was my suiter..... all four pieces of it.....

Safe travels

Dozens of times. Generally, US via Killadelphia. I was on a first name basis with the luggage delivery folks at MHT for quite awhile.

I have had luggage lost by every major US carrier save for AA, but give them time, as I'm flying them frequently right now to get Plat status.. US is in the lead by far, followed by UA (generally on tight intl. connections), with NW a distant 3rd.

Usually, weather had something to do with the snafus, save for PHL.

Once in the last 5 years (Jetblue, Seattle, 2005). It was recovered, intact.

Pretty lousy record given that I've only checked bags on 6 occasions (three round-trips) during that time.

I believe that never checking bags is the path to enlightenment. On the other hand, I suppose checking baggage is a good way to free oneself of attachment to one's worldly possessions.

For biz travel I carry on 95+% of the time, and have never had a problem (other than slow delivery to the carousel) when I have had to check.

For family vacation travel, the record has been much worse. Have never lost a bag, had one damaged, or anything stolen, but have had one or more bags delayed around 25% of the time by a variety of airlines including UA, DL, and US. Most recently, returning from Italy last week on US, got our bags before customs no problem, turned them back into the baggage recheck, (with a 3 hour layover), and 2 out of three didn't make the last segment home. At least it was coming home, and the bags were delivered the next day. The previous time was with DL on our outbound, and it took two days to get our bags.

Lost never.

Delayed probably once a year, of course, always on the flights out, never home.

I'd love to never have to check bags, but, unfortunately, I have 45lbs. of specialised tools that need to go with me wherever I go. Since I have to check those, I check my clothes as well. When travelling on personal matters, I always take only what I can carry on.

Lost or delayed?

Lost once in almost 900 flights: this year on an OM (MIAT Mongolian) - LH connection in PEK.

Delayed frequently. Usually AA-BA connections to Frankfurt or AA-PZ (TAM Mercosur) to Asuncion.

I've never lost any permanently either.

In the past decade or so, I've checked bags virtually every flight. I estimate (roughly) that's at least 5,000-6,000 segments. My bags have gone missing on the outbound only about 5 (very memorable) times, but they've been slow to come home probably 4 times that often. On average it happens about twice a year.

Out of my probably approx. 200 flights (segments) in the last 6 years, I never lost any luggage and got delayed delivery 4 times. Once because of a short connection in Vienna, three times, all on the same itinerary, because of handling in the States. Needless to say that only a small fraction of my flights are to the US...

Lost never.

It is several hundred flights since my luggage was last significantly delayed (by 3 weeks). Then again, it has been several hundred flights since I've checked bags (other than at the a/c on puddlejumpers).

twice in a single 24 hour period

I had been away on a business trip for little over a week so I had a larger bag than I could carry onto an RJ plus I didn't want to lug it through a connection.

I flew on a Sun evening from Miami to Green Bay through IAD. My luggage did not arrive. I was told it would be on the 9AM flight into Green Bay. It wasn't. I went to my meeting wearing the jeans & polo shirt I had traveled in. Back to the hotel at 3 to check out and head to the airport for a 5:30 flight to IAD. My bag arrived at the hotel at 4 PM.

Took my bag straight to the airport without opening it and checked it in for my fllight home from Green Bay to IAD. Arrived in IAD, no bag. Lost twice in less than 24 hours. Good job UA.

Lost never.

Delayed once. Missed connection at AMS from EVA to BMI. Put on the next flight and sent by courier to my home address. I was on public transport - we arrived within 5 mins of each other.

Damaged twice. Contents OK, but suitcase a write-off both times. Once SQ on arrival at Zurich. Another was CO between LAX and San Antonio (via Houston).

SQ at Zurich were so nice about it, I almost wished it happened more often.

CO were arrogant, nasty and rude.
