Aborted landings. How common are pull-ups?
Yesterday on the Chicago to Frankfurt 10pm Lufthansa flight on an Airbus 340 the captain (or 340 automation?) pulled up and announced strong windshear.
We did land the second time. The second attempt was much smoother (manual?) As I had time to kill between flights I went to a window to observe other landings. Within 2 hours a total of 3 flights aborted their landing while already above the runway. How common is this? Tapani |
In over 500 flights, I have had 1 go-around.

I had one, it was last year on TED into LAS. The fancy flying nearly caused me to vomit.

They are usually weather related or a runway problem like debris or another plane on runway. Last October, my plane and a bad weather front arrived at the same time and visibility disappeared in minutes. We made one attempt to land, pulled up and tried again before landing at an airport 100 miles away.

I've definitely experienced more than one, and I haven't been on anywhere like 500 flights. Once we went around twice, I'm trying to remember where and why. I suppose it will come back to me.

I've had four in approx. 1500 landings.

Flew 220K last year and did not have one aborted landing.

6 times for me:
IAH (weather), ex-EWR, landed on 2nd attempt HNL (military aircraft cut in front of us), ex-HND, landed on 2nd attempt LAX (weather), lex-SAN, landed on 2nd attempt MXP (weather), ex-LAX, diverted to GOA TPE (weather), ex-LAX, diverted to KHH PHX (preceding aircraft did not exit runway fast enough), ex-ONT, landed on 2nd attempt |
Well over 1MM BIS and only one missed approach, never a go around. ATC@PHL scewed that one up.

Aborted landings are reasonably common - I've experienced several. Just yesterday I saw one while sitting in an airport lounge, in good weather and no a/c on the runways or taxiways. |

I seem to have a significantly higher ratio of aborted landings than anybody else. It seems to happen fairly regularly when I fly.
Spokane (GEG) on United, St. Louis and Albuquerque on American. I really do not remember all of them but I do remember the most significant was Air France going into Paris (CDG) on a transAtlantic. Interior aisle seat on the 777, dense fog in Paris, aborted the landing twice, finally landed in DENSE fog on the third try, it was a little less comfortable because I wasn't near the window. Typically it is an aircraft that simply hasn't cleared the runway yet and the pilot makes the call to abort the landing before the critical stage (odds are the aircraft would have cleared the runway before the plane touched down but better safe than sorry). St. Louis, Paris, and Spokane were weather related, all the others (many of which I don't remember) were simply the matter stated above, no need to feel uncomfortable. |
Had three (3) inside of a month's time a few years back. Started to make me nervous.

I've had 2 in about 1.5 million-plus miles. One serious and scary, one surprising but no big deal.

~350 segments, zero aborted landings as a pax thus far fortunately, though I have witnessed quite a few as an aviation enthusiast watching from the ground...
