Poll - how many countries have you visited?

Doc posted a long index on a recent thread of every *country* that exists in the world, which is quite some reading. No list is ever going to 100% "correct" but these 2 lists below from WorldAtlas seem pretty darn close to me. It gives a total of 250 different countries and recognised territories/dependencies that are all possible for a tourist to visit.

(I can think of a few like Ross Dependency and British Antarctic Territory that should be added, and some like Palmyra Atoll, Coral Sea Islands, Kingman Reef, Navassa Island etc that should not be in there in a fit, but that's for another thread.)

These 2 lists do NOT include non-existent "countries" or "territories/dependencies" often commonly misidentified as such - like Scotland, Tasmania, Easter Island, Wales, Newfoundland, Alaska, Micronesia, Lapland, Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, etc, etc

http://www.worldatlas.com/dependtr.htm in conjunction WITH -

http://www.worldatlas.com/nations.htm

Be interesting to see postings here of where FlyerTalkers have been on their travels. Be nice if countries from these two lists were the only ones "claimed", for the sake of some overall consistency.

And opinions will also vary on this, but I personally do not think/regard a purely transit stop via an airport at Bahrain, Singapore, Frankfurt, Reyjkavik, etc counts as "visiting" that country.

Forty-two real countries by quick count of the pins on the map.

There is a "century" club where travelers seek 100 "countries", but their count includes "countries" like Alaska, etc...

As per "your" definition of what constitutes a visit I can include.....

Belgium
Canada (born here and travelled extensively)
Chile
Brasil (sorta live here now half the time)
Egypt (6 months as a UN peacekeeper)
England
France
Greece
Holland
Israel
Lebanon
Peru
Spain
Switzerland
"West" Germany (10 years living and 4 tours in the Canadian Army)
USA

I also sat on the border in my Leopard tank ready to "visit" East Germany many times. Fortunately I didn't have too. One of the interesting things 25 years ago about being in Europe in the military was that to travel cross border all you needed was your NATO I.D. card.......an authorized leave pass........and that's it. No passport or visa....nothing....there were no hassles either even from the French who were not NATO members......it was the sam ein the middle east as well. Just flash the UN I.D. and you could walk past anybody and they did nothing 98% of the time.

Those were the days.

I feel so inadequate:

United Kingdom
France
Holland
Belgium
Germany
Spain
Greece
USA
Canada
Singapore
Japan (Airport at least)

There.. Its the shortest list.. but size isnt everything.. I've spent at least six months in each of the following US states too

Michigan
New York
Connecticut
North Carolina
Massachusets

Considering I've only been in the US for 7 years thats not bad going..

[Edit:Added Singapore and Japan]
