It was ozstamps, not me, who made up the rules!

I'm just kind of unofficially enforcing them, for the common weal! No self-interest or anything like that .... no hissy fit about how I could have made my total 35 instead of 32 if I had done like the other cheaters....but nooooo, I always follow the rules!

Kathy .. no, the 'rules' are entirely what each poster is comfortable with - as in all FT posts. But thanks greatly for your post politely asking folks to consider adhering to a central listing.

All I did was suggest that for the sake of consistency that posters perhaps try and restrict their lists to the 250 +/- countries that WorldAtlas.com listed out, kindly sourced for us by doc.

Of the 50 or so posts in the past few days I for one am pleased to see 95% of folks are adhering carefully to those 250 names, making it just so easy to read.

I PERSONALLY believe that Wales, Scotland, Texas (!) etc are not *countries*, but hey, all have their enormous individual charms! To me that is the constant allure of foreign travel - the more you see the more you WANT to see.

This is simply a fun thread, and shows why the airlines and hotels need to be VERY NICE to FlyerTalkers - we sure keep their International routes and aircraft VERY full. Imagine the 6 (or 7!) figure $$$ revenue to them over the years simply based on stimpy's post above.

Does the U.N. in Geneva count? What about Lapland?

I just noticed that I have all the letters of the alphabet covered except K, W, X and Z. I'm going to hit Kenya, Zanzibar and perhaps Zimbabwe soon, but what starts with W or X?
</font>
stimpy, hey count them in if YOU think they are countries.

U.N. Geneva I'd personally regard as a fair claim - it has issued its own postage stamps heavily since 1969. I spent Christmas in Rovaniemi Lapland once which was wonderful fun, despite being minus 30 on the Arctic Circle. (The Concorde flies in each year on charter for Xmas.) The only time I had my passport out between Helsinki and Rovaniemi was to get get a goofy tourist stamp applied at the North Pole Post Office there, so I do not regard it as a 'country' but a geographic region spanning several countries.

Great point about the 26 letters of the Alphabet. The only existing "real" W country/dependency I'd personally be happy with counting is the Wallis and Futuna Islands, which has been a French Pacific Territory for over 40 years, but has issued its own postage stamps since 1920. ['Wake Island' IMO is a rather silly anomaly in the listing charts.]

I personally cannot think of a country, recent past or present that begins with the letter "X" - can anyone else? Enjoy Africa, and my tip is to ensure you take the short trip across to Zambia. Sitting on the edge of Victoria Falls was THE tourist experience of my lifetime. AND you'll also notch up TWO "Z" countries in the one trip.

I've visited 35 countries but mostly by land not by air and not counting Quebec, Kurdistan, Palestine or other disputed states.

The more important question which was touched on by mentioning a stopover should not count if all you did was land at the airport.

I'd like to see a good definition of what it really means to have been somewhere?

Here are some examples that include state and country visits:

My dad took a greyhound bus round trip in one weekend from Arkansas to the border of Maine to make his 48th continental state? (sorta sick kind of mileage run) I think this counts as a state visit because of the effort.

We drove a little out of the way to visit a few extra New England states last year and a friend in Boston told me his definition required that you took a pee in the state or the visit doesn't count.

My Cousin patrols the northern no-fly zone over Iraq. He has never landed there but I give him credit for a visit.

I think it is best to have a list of countries you have had a sufficient experience in to culturally count as a visit, and another list that you have only technically visited.

Edited for spelling mistakes. Hope I got them all.

Since I've only been to 13, I'm not even going to bother to list them. Compared to the average, I'm pretty sad.
