What's the big deal? It's SOP at many airports and with many airlines. This year I've had it at JNB CPT STN GOA GVA and IST, flying with SA, LX, TK and FR and on 777s, 330s, 320s and 737s.

That's why.
At GLA, BA will often use both a jetbridge at the front and steps at the back. Very sensible, and speeds things up no end.
