Well....

Where would you go within a 5 hour flight?

I am looking at flights for ORD from me. The best places I can come up are all caribbean based.

Considering that I am living 1 degree north to Equator, with 92F/84F day/night and 75-85% humidity 365 days a year... anything within 5h flight will warm (too warm).

Rapid City, SD is nice and warm in July and August - average highs in the mid to upper 80s. Just a 2.5 hour non-stop from ORD via AA or UA regional jet service!

What do you want out of this vacation?
Lounging around on beach?
Watersports? (Scuba, sailing, snorkel)
Adventure? (Mountain biking, cave diving, climbing ruins)

AUA/Aruba.
1. Hardly rains, as it's basically desert.
2. Takes American currency without fear of ripoff.
3. You can get a direct flight thru United.
4. People are friendly.
5. Out of the hurricane belt so you don't have to worry about cancelling a trip due to that.

Depends on the time of year, duration, etc.

I'm always up for several days hanging out in the National Parks of the American Southwest. Fly into PHX, head up to the AZ/UT border, hit Antelope, see if I can win the Wave lottery, hike the Narrows, hike/camp/hangout.

Not an adventurous family? - St. Kitts (though I fear it's been commercialized since I was last there 10+ years ago), Aruba, Grand Cayman.

From SFO the flight to Hawaii is just under 5 hours so that settled that.

San Diego generally has beautiful weather, lots of things to see and do and is within 5 hours of ORD.

What does everyone mean in the thread title? Babies through great-grandparents? And what does warmer mean? Tropical with guaranteed 90-plus days? Or just warmer than Chicago, such as St Louis.

Savannah, Charlston, Outer Banks, Atlanta, Florida, Gulf Coast, New Orleans, Galvaston/Houston, Austin, Phoenix/Scottsdale, Santa Fe (but it can get cold), Palm Springs, San Diego, Santa Barbara.

Well, Damascus, Baghdad and the Gaza Strip spring to mind, but they might be too hot for comfort.

I think I'll stick with Nice, Seville or perhaps Dubrovnik - and I don't even have to go for anywhere near the full five hours.
