What is the likelihood of electric outlets on airplanes in the future?

It sure would be nice to not have to worry about battery life on my laptop during long flights. Will it ever happen? Why or why not?

It has happened. Many planes have these already.

Good to know. Where can they be found? What is the likelihood of seeing them in the cheapest level economy class seating?

Depends on the airline and the plane. There is no single answer.

A number of airlines already have it. Iberia does and I believe Delta does too in many of their long haul aircraft.

I just checked all the Iberia planes and business class seems to have power on most of them. A couple of the A340's even had power for every single economy seat!

Nice trend and I hope it'll continue into the economy class. Does anyone remember when it started?

Some US carriers installed emPower plugs in the 1990s, IIRC. I know that US removed them from planes in the early 2000s so it has been a while.

The more useful "universal" power outlets are a more recent development but mid-2000s is when those started to show up on planes, I think. Continental was installing them in 2006 so at least then.

USB ports are quite common on modern planes. You can't charge your laptop with them but you can charge a tablet or phone.

United seems to have them on most of the planes I fly. IME they charge a phone but only keep a laptop going, not charging.

+1 on not enough power to charge a laptop while it is running. However, when needed I've been able to power off my laptop and plug it in to charge at a very slow rate...maybe 10% of battery on a 3 hour flight.

The best case is board with a fully charged laptop and use inseat power to work so the battery never discharges during the trip.

Alaska has 120 V AC and USB ports on nearly their entire fleet.
