Don't use ATMs - how much cash is enough for my Hawaii trip??

How much cash is the right amount of cash?

This always confuses me, I am taking credit cards and debit cards for a week vacation.

What is a good amount of cash to have on hand?

Really?

Personally, I spend about $5 cash a week. Without knowing a single thing about your trip, I'm sure that $10 in cash should suffice.

(Seriously, among the details that would be relevant to anyone remotely interested in answering your question with any degree of accuracy: Destination, accommodations, activities, size of your group, access to ATMs, etc.)

I use cash about once a month. I keep about $20 or so on me,plus some change in the car for parking meters; but a real "emergency" is when one credit card doesn't work and I have to use another.

From Texas to Hawaii
In the group - two, but I am only paying for my things.
I have never used an ATM.... I have my debit card but have never used an ATM.
Locally I still write checks.
Hotel and Activities have been paid for.

Did I answer all the pertinent questions?

How much cash?

Where in Hawaii? what kinds of activities? do you tend to stick to super touristy places or more authentic out of the way ones? are you planning to go to any crafts markets? Do you believe in tipping? Do you like nice restaurants or cheap ones? Will you be going to beaches?

since it's domestic, worst case you end up with more dollars or have to go to an atm... If you are planning to become a traveler of sufficient frequency to use Flyertalk, you should consider getting a no-fee/fee-reimbursing ATM card.

Big Island
Snorkeling
Ocean things - Swimming with Dolphins and Observing Manta Rays
Luau
I do tip
I do both tourist and out of the way
Never thought of Craft Market but that sounds fun - I will look into the ATM card.

Virtually none. That's why god created ATM cards.

How much cash?

It would be wise to have more cash on the.Big Island than say Oahu, particularly if you will spend any time outside the resorts of Kona.

How much cash?

OP: I live in Hawaii, and rarely use cash. For a week, bring an ATM card, CC, and $50, just in case. Have fun

Once you leave US, situation is quite different. In Japan, for example, it is normal to carry $500-$1000 equivalent of yens in wallet.

true

japan for a week 200,000+ yen

taiwan for a week (for the first time), brought 2000USD, changed out 1000USD at the airport and only spent 250USD equivalent - Taiwan was surprisingly affordable

Here in Germany most people prefer to use cash instead of credit / debit cards. So, its common to have 100s of euros in cash.

I rarely carry more than $100 equivalent in cash wherever I am in the world. You just don't need it.

Seems to be an ongoing concern for you:

Personally I don't carry much if at all when travelling unless I know I will need it immediately on arrival (taxi or public transport), then withdraw local currency from an ATM as needed.
