What are some wacky airport names? How about good airport names?

One way for an airport to have a wacky name is to add the "international".

Here's my preliminary list of wacky airport names....

Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (with two spouses names, sounds like they are a donor to a charity. However, National is a nice, understated name).

Fresno Yosemite International Airport (either that or FAT)

Fort Wayne International Airport (who are they trying to kid. Should have kept it as Baer Field)

General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (why not add another name)

Lubbock International Airport

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (why not just National Airport or Washington National)

General Mitchell International Airport (too bad it's no longer General Mitchell Field)

Good names
Long Beach Airport (short and simple)
Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (no pretense)
Boise Airport (short and simple)
Eppley Airfield, Omaha (a medium sized airport, nothing to be ashamed of)
Westchester County Airport (no longer a dump)
Washington Dulles International Airport (somewhat long but no confusion with Dallas)
London City Airport
Gatwick Airport
London Heathrow Airport

Remember Dallas Fort Worth Regional Airport? Back in those days, it was clearly understated! Not very Texan.

To me the best airport name has always been "Idlewild." It's a wonderful word.

One odd name is for IAH. What is the difference between international and intercontinental?

One is between nations, one is between continents. US to Canada is international, not intercontinental.

Things are bigger in Texas.

We should give them some slack. In the old days, there was Houston International Airport (now Hobby). When IAH was built, they chose the name Houston Intercontinenal.

I don't care for the Bush name. I'd rather keep the old names, like Little Rock National, Washington National, Houston Intercontinental. In the days when you called the airlines to make a reservation, I used to say those names. Then the internet took over and I can now book a flight and take a flight without saying a single word. I've done that before. Usually, I do say a word because they serve drinks.

GRR- Gerald R. Ford International Airport- stumbles down the stair optional

Then there are the dueling Florida Panhandle airports-

Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP- because they wanted it to sound bigger than Pamana City Bech)

Northwest Florida Regional Airport (VPS- about 60 miles westward near Ft. Walton Beach and slightly bigger than the International airport)

Over the past 10 years, VPS has been listed by about six different names depending on which airline you're flying, leading to everyone, including tv marketers, just calling it VPS instead of trying to figure out whether a given carrier calls it Valpariaso, Okaloosa Regional, Ft. Walton Beach, Eglin AFB, Northwest Florida, Destin, Okaloosa County... I think I've had boarding passes over the years that listed all those except Destin as the city.

Not named after a person, but I always liked the name Albuquerque International Sunport. Plus it's an attractive facility with good amenities.

What makes that worse is that AF staff almost always call it "Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle". It's annoying...

I've never got the need to name public buildings and the like after people, so these, in the UK, stand out as being particularly ridiculous (most of the others being simply named after location).

Also note that:

John Lennon Airport's slogan is "Above us Only Sky".

George Best Airport has a large bar sponsored by a brand of whiskey.

Robin Hood airport isn't the one that serves Nottingham - it's near Doncaster, in South Yorkshire. Sherwood Forest did extend further north, and it was the northern area that was more associated with Robin Hood, but it's still a bizarre name for the airport.
