I bought a car in Belgium once - but as I travelled to collect it, rather than bought it on a whim, it doesn't really count.

In the spirit of the question, I had a $5000 spending accident in an art gallery in Taos, New Mexico once....

Diamond Christian Dior watch.

That was a funny purchase. I own my own business and earn my own income and husband and I have our joint money and our own. I ummed and ahhed about the cost and my husband said number times "get whatever you want", meaning it's your money to spend it as you like. He was urging me to get it if I liked it. Other staff heard this and it was like an overhead billboard turned on that said "boyfriend, willing to buy anything for girlfriend or mistress.. man the counters.... commission, commission, commission". All staff present walked quickly to behind their counters and opened them up and urged me to look at the items up close!

I don't usually buy stuff when travelling as I hate the idea of having to carry it with me. I guess other than hotel stays and plane tickets, the most expensive things I bought are phones and camera lenses.

I'm not sure this is my highest, but the one that comes to mind is $4,000 worth of copying and binding services from a print shop in London. (I was preparing for a workshop.) This was a bit outside my normal purchase patterns as regards what, how much of it, and where. Got a call from the credit card company to make sure nobody had stolen my card or its number.

See my signature line. That is the most expensive thing I've bought while traveling.

As long as we're talking purchases while travelling and not literally travelling, an apartment. $75,000 CDN give or take.

Threads like this make me wish I were in a different line of work (I'm in education). Pretty much all of my discretionary income is spent on the travel itself, not material stuff at my destinations

Seriously, Mrs. FrogProf and I just start out assuming a cruise will cost several times the up-front cost.
