Brazil presidential candidate killed in Gen Aviation crash - flying safe?
Not sure if another thread already exists.

I want to ask something, for those who have been around for a while.
I've only been into miles and points for 1.5 years. Before that I rarely paid attention to airline news.
There have been a lot of airplane crashes recently. Is this normal compared to history?

I wrote to the moderator:
I feel this thread took a rather callous direction, dwelling in statistics on the face of national tragedy. As one of millions of Brazilians, I am very saddened by the untimely death of a political leader of my country. I ask that this thread be removed.

Please, let's keep this thread on topic, respectful and sensitive of those who might be drawn ito this thread and be affected by the incident. Discussions that lean toward eschatological or political discussion fit best in OMNI PR.
As this better fits the topic of general aviation safety and discussion, we will relocate the thread.
Posts that are dilatory to the topic have been deleted.
Thank you for your understanding.

BBC:
Note: this was a general aviation, not airline, incident.
"The two hours of audio, the maximum recording capacity of the equipment, which were received and validated by certified technicians, were not of the flight of 13 August," air force spokesman Pedro Luis Farcic said in a statement (in Portuguese).

Approximately 3 billion passengers fly commercially each year.
So far this year, around 800 have died.
Yes, 800 people dead is a tragedy, but in the scheme of things it's not even close to enough to be called a drop in the bucket.
