To you, yes; to other people maybe not.

Quit smoking. All you're doing is make a small number of scuzzbuckets rich as you slowly kill yourself. And it will be an excruciating death unless you're one of the minority who has a massive heart attack in your sleep.

Cigarettes in their current form are a marketing ploy--there is nothing beneficial or cultural about cigarettes.

My wife quit smoking after getting pregnant 4 years ago, but recently picked up ecigarettes and is now way into vaping. I guess better for her than full smoking, but those that use them tend to think they are invisible. I am sensitive to fragrances and there have been a few times where either the wind blew her vapor right into me or she tried a flavor that seemed to be "heavier" and stay in the air longer. Gives me an instant migraine-like headache. But it really depends - most of the flavors have no impact. So a comparison to perfume is more appropriate then true second hand smoke. It took several times seeing me in pain for her to believe the vapor was the cause -- that the smoke has no impact seems to be dogma in the vaping community (as the dicks who complain comment evidences )

She did a lot of research on ecigs and flying -- as this article covers the federal actions were confusing but the answer is generally no:
Sorry Smokers, You Can't Use Electronic Cigarettes On Airplanes

I wonder what the logic is behind banning e-cigs on planes? Are they any more offensive than perfume, bad breath, carry-on Thai food or BO? Are they a fire risk?

I really don't care one way or the other...I'm just wondering what the logic is by people who do care.

As an aside, I wonder if the product gets a bad rap because of the way it's marketed. When I first saw e-cigs, they were in the raunchier convenience stores and gas stations. The ads for them were on trash cans and bus stop signs next to ads for payday loans and the like. The ads were more about the flavors than smoking cessation. It wasn't terribly clear to me (a nonsmoker) what it was...at first, it seemed almost like an ultraportable shisha or something. Contrast that to the gum, which is and has always been in the pharmacy and marketed first and foremost as a way to quit smoking.

If e-cigs play a role in getting at least some people off of tobacco, then I'm all for them.

I think the main issue is that to some people it *looks* like you're smoking a cigarette.

Yeah, pinniped. If I didn't know what they were, I would've been pretty alarmed to see someone "smoking" on a flight. As they become more known, I guess that will change over time.

I also agree that the products get a bad reputation because of the way some of them are marketed. I don't really need to see a picture of some girl who looks 20 smoking a watermelon flavored blue ecig in a club. Maybe I'm just the wrong demographic, but I think it makes it feel sleazy. I think payday loans is a perfect comparison. I want my bank to look like Citibank, not Crazy Brothers Loans. Same with ecigs - I personally smoke NJoy and Lexfield and their marketing looks clean and simple to me. But I guess the breathless payday loan style companies are probably effective, too, otherwise payday loans wouldn't exist.

Maybe I'm just not exciting enough - I like stuff that works. I fly mostly United, bank with Citi, used to smoke Marlboro, etc. I like Virgin America okay, but not because of their "mood lighting" that some people mention. I don't really need mood lighting on a flight, I need a J or F upgrade.

I have a buddy with a medical marijuana license and he uses the e-cig to smoke his pot. He smokes the thing everywhere. In bars, restaurants etc. I'm sure he could get away with it on an airplane too... Maybe he should try LAX-DEN for starters...

As already noted up-thread in message #9, they are banned by the FAA on all US flights, and good riddance.

This is not a dig at your SO, but there is something (as a non-smoker) deeply ironic about a smoker complaining something smoking related tastes nasty and so refuses to use it. It's only recently that non-smokers have been able to have the same choice

Yes. This is exactly how e-cigs smell to me. The first time I sat near someone in a pub who was vaping, I had a madeleine moment - It took me back to a production of Oliver that I performed in as a child. Fortunately, I came to my senses before bursting out in song...

Perhaps I miss your point. I am a non-smoker myself, and I don't find the idea that smokers would dislike nicotine gum deeply ironic. I do not know what either cigarettes or nicotine gum taste like, but I presume that someone who tells me what they think of their tastes is being sincere. Also, I didn't say he refuses to use nicotine gum; I just said he doesn't like the taste.

And on airplanes at least, which is what we're talking about here, non-smokers have had it their way for well more than a decade. Which--again, as a nonsmoker--I'm fine with.

Unrelated to Jenbel's post, but related to others concerning the aroma of e-cig vapor, they come in a lot of flavors/aromas. My SO's preference is for vanilla. He does not like the tobacco-flavored ones. When he starts a new filter, the vanilla aroma is noticeable (but not unpleasant) to me for the first few minutes but quickly becomes unnoticeable.

Someone I know smokes or actually vapes through the entire flight almost non stop. Their brand produces no detectable odor, and easily hides it by getting windiw seats and putting head down to purse or kids teddy bear and vaping into it. The vapor is almost zero if its held in 10 seconds. Many flights, many puffs, nobody has ever caught on. And of course, lav trips for carefree vaping are always fun for someone i know.
