Not at all. There are so many aspects of impossibility of flying an MD80 inverted like that, starting with the fact that to fly inverted, level, you need the nose up at about 20 degrees - look at a stunt plane at an airshow. The fuel flow would quit in a moment as the fuel outlet from the bottom of the tank would now be at the top (an aerobatic plane needs a special aerobatic fuel system to overcome this) - need I go on ?
Didn't the same actor appear in pretty much the same script about a train not long ago - "Unstoppable" ? That was a load of inane bo11ocks from beginning to end as well.

OMG - the wife nearly walked out. No wonder it was R Rated. The first 30 seconds there is naked butt crack, naked breasts and even magic triangle. The first 10 minutes I thought it was going to be a soft porn flick. There were numerous lines of coke being snorted and even a heroin injection.
I would have liked to see more planes. The NTSB trial was not as bad as I thought it would be. Glad I went to see it. If this does not get Denzel an Oscar, it will at least get him an Oscar nomination.

The plane and the invert etc was not too bad. The FAs were amazing - they are rarely that pretty on the flights I take.

Went to see Flight this evening, and, coincidentally, there was an unannounced, live Q and A after the movie with the writer, John Gatins, and the director, Robert Zemekis. This kind of thing doesn't happen everywhere.
Writer has been working on the script for 11 years and had hoped to direct it himself but couldn't get it made. Zemekis and Denzil both saw the script at the about the same time and independently expressed interest. At least that's the story. The writer is a nervous flyer and had been interacting with pilots a lot for prior project. He said that this was the first time that he actually thought about pilots as human beings; before that he had never been comfotable about thinking a pilot was anything other than an anonymous, totally upstanding, unflawed entity. He suddenly had the idea of writing a story about an alcoholic pilot.
Regarding the crash itself, he initially was planning to model the crash on the "Al Haynes 1989 crash" (UA 232; Sioux City). In doing research, one of the pilots he was consulting with told hime that he should really be looking at the Alaska Air Crash over the Pacific (flight 261, 2000). This served as the model for the crash in the movie. The writer said hs spent a lot of time reading NTSB reports and listening to black box recordings.
For filming, an airplane set was built on a "rotisserie" so that they could film right-side-up and inverted. Plus a lot of CGI.
Many other questions answered as well. Some of them spoilers.

I saw Soul Plane in the theatre with my buddy wearing Camelbaks loaded full of rum mixed with blue Gatorade. Sadly, after 2 litres apiece of our tube-fed noxious hydrating substance the movie still wasn't enjoyable and we left early. I'm proud to say I've grown up a little bit since those days.
A bit of a man-face on this one, but that's just my careful perspective. After working as an airline caterer and seeing countless transvestite FA's that "let their guard down" while the plane sits on the ramp...; Never judge a book by its curves, that's all.
And now the information you really want.
The hot flight attendant is played by Nadine Velazquez, an actress who has mostly done television work including a recurring stint on My Name Is Earl. Looks like she's starting to land movie roles.
And she was in Chasing Papi, which is the Fairchild Semiconductor of scorching hot Latina actresses.

I saw it last Sunday and was very happy with it. The plane crash sequence is extremely intense and the portrayal of Denzel as a high functioning alcoholic and the morality study there is excellent. Nice turn by John Goodman too in only three scenes. I hope it gets an Oscar Nod myself. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 4.

Anyone noticed the cause of catastrophic failure is the same as this real life incident? the moment they showed it in the NTSB investigation it struck me, as it was featured in a Discovery channel program.

*DC9s do not have fuel jettison systems
*The DC9 hydraulic controls are on the first officer's lower-left instrument panel, not the overhead panel
*The elevators are not hydraulically powered
*There are no flight control disconnect handles
*Pulling a fire handle to arm, then discharge, the engine fire protection would cutoff the fuel, hydraulics, electrics, and pneumatics to that engine and the engine would be shut down
*The jack-screw moves the stabilizer, not the elevator.
The idea that flying faster through the thunderstorm also made no sense at all and would have made things much worse, not better. Slowing to the applicable rough-air speed would lessen the impact of the turbulence.

The glorification of major fatal accidents for commercial gain of film producers is one of the tawdry and sordid aspects of B-movie Hollywood. It's not a documentary and thus you don't expect accuracy, but they will take these misfortunate events and tart them up for maximum "impact". I suppose if you are some uneducated hick from the boondocks you can get your thrills from such films, and will pay money to see this sort of thing.
No accuracy, and no respect for those involved in the incident that gave them the idea. An Oscar ? Has this award really descended to such depths ?
