I Just Talked My Way into my First Business Trip in Two Years
Scene Setting: I work running an independent rental car company in Durham, NC. The office is inside a car dealership and we even carry their name. Today, the used car department found a vehicle they wanted to buy and sell her at an auction in Newburgh, NY. They were preparing to put two drivers in one of my rental cars, have them drive 10 hours to Newburgh, stay the night, then drive back. I asked why they weren't flying the drivers and both of them said A. The fare is too high and B. One of us is scared to fly.
I looked on USAirways.com and saw RDU-PHL-SWF was only $106 so I offered to fly up tomorrow and drive the vehicle back. They paid for my airfare and will reimburse food, tolls and gas. Plus, they have to pay my salary from portal to portal including the overtime. Sure, it's possibly the least glamorous trip anyone on Flyertalk has even taken, but a trip is a trip!
