How do YOU interpret the lighter colored (tan) areas on inflight electronic maps?

Are those areas desert?-- dry, arid, vegetation-free?

Or is political significance implied by what appears to be broadly equatorial region(s)?

Mods feel free to move; I don't find this question treated elsewhere.

We were taught in elementary school....it's dessert with two esses because you always want seconds! I think desert was one s because only one 's' could grow there or something along those lines?
