Beds in hotels: why so short?

I am about 5'10, not too tall by any stretch. However, when I find myself at some nice hotels (Hilton, Renaissance, etc) I more often than not find my feet hanging from the edge of the bed as the bed is too short.

Why are beds in hotels so short? Do people taller than me have more issues with this?

Happy travelling.

I'm pretty sure hotel mattresses are standard length....

Can't say for the other chains, but Hilton uses standard 80 inch long mattresses for the king and queen beds.

It probably seems shorter since they have a ton of pillows usually, but the beds are standard sizes.

Let's say it was shorter, maybe to give the room the impression that it is larger?

You should try the Hotel Procrustes, where the beds are always just the right length.

I'm fine if my feet have to hang off the end. Maybe it helps that I sleep on my stomach.

The worst is a short bed with a foot board. Then there's no way to get comfy except by sleeping diagonally.

I priced out a longer bed out once.. and found out its more than double the price..

Possibly to customize a shorter bed would affect the price as well to the negative, because of economies of scale..

The likelihood of a shorter bed in hotels is low..

I'm 6' 3" and never noticed hotel beds being too short. Can we officially label this a myth?

Strange, I get the short bed sensation at home but never at hotels.
