Lake Geneva is my favorite, I certainly didn't notice a nice beach though.

Lake Como from the terrace of the Albergo Belvedere in Torno (village) on a Sunday morning, with the sun shining on Moltrasio, and hearing the church bells from the other side of the lake ... with a good cappucino in one hand on the way to the lips!

Ditto on Lake Como. Lake Konigssee in Bavaria is also incredible.

New York State lakes.

The Adriondeck region in the upper New York state is really beautiful especially in Fall.

The two lakes which I found is scenic and great day trips are :
Lake George

Lake Placid (Area where Winter Olympics was held years ago)

I have heard of some other lakes in the region like Fingers Lake which I am planning to visit sometime soon.

Any lake/laguna in South American Altiplano, especially Laguna Miscanti and Miniques in Chile, Laguna Verde and Roja in Bolivia. Of course, Uyuni Salt Lake..

In Argentina, Lago Argentino with Perito Moreno in the background.

Blue Lagoon in Iceland.

In the USA: Deer Lake (WA) and Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park at sunset when you are climbing down from the trails.

+1

On a clear sunny day the view over Peyto Lake is almost unreal.

Lake Tahoe or Lake Bled as far as lakes go.

And for rivers, the Nile in northern Sudan, or the Yuba river near Downieville, CA.

Hard to beat those lakes in the Canadian Rockies and for pure elegance Como and Lugano in the Alps, but for accessible (lakes you don't have to hike into) I nominate Lake Tenaya near Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite, Lake McDonald in Glacier and Fallen Leaf Lake next to Lake Tahoe. (How's that for a run on sentence ?) wj
