Does anybody know if the NAM models have the US maps pre-loaded for the GPS function....? If so, I assume I can kill those maps and load the local maps I will be using on a regular basis...?

Also, what about software like Garmin Mobile XT... will drivers such as that be preloaded on the phone...?

All laps are included - you can either download over the air on the fly, or pre-load them on the PC, I guess this is what you are asking. Usually nokia devices are regionalized, so I would assume they would come pre-loaded.

If you want turn by turn navigation for NAM, I think this is not included - maybe a trial??

What do you mean by turn by turn....? Do you mean real time navigation...? I thought AGPS functionality gave the unit just that... or...?

Hi, not quite. In my opinion, we(Nokia) makes the marketing of products pretty complicated sometimes.

AGPS - is assisted GPS. This used cell tower(network) information to quickly located roughly where the phone is while it locks onto satellites. This speeds up the user experience. AGPS can be pretty accurate, down to a few meters in some cases.

Turn by Turn navigation is the same experience you get with dedicated Sat Nav devices. "turn left here, turn right in 100m" etc.

With nokia maps you get:-

FREE: Access to all global level street and 3d imagary where available.
You can plan a route for free, it will list the text directions and show the route on the screen.

PAY: Voice guidance - real time turn by turn navigation for driving and walking routes(n97 has compass for more accurate navigation experience)

You can find more detail here:

Thanks cressers-- if I understand correctly, to have a voice guided GPS service, you will have to pay a fee to your cell service provider...?

Yes, you pay "someone" Depends what operator/where in the world you are.

In the maps applicaiton when you select NAVIGATE for a destination, the first time it will ask you if you want

1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year, 3 years (well it does where I am)

Usually with N series you get a weeks trial, so have a play first and see what you think.

I find it personally very useful on holiday etc, I download the map for the country I am visiting. I may also buy a guide (I did this for Rome and it was handy finding a nearby cafe)

I have the maps also for my home country, and again, it can be a life saver. I just wish you could jump from a web page with an address on it, and say "navigate me there!"

Thanks for the feedback.... this helps me take a lot with what is posted over on the Techie forums with a pinch of salt.... its amazing to read what some folks are writing about this phone. I guess the tech world is similar to the wine world... one needs to understand which critic writes what about which producer...

Tactile sensing of the new plastic casing while taking in the rich content of a flat panel display is indeed similar to appreciating the color of the wine, then applying the olfactory sensor to the goblet during first swirl.

Cheers,

Okay,

Got mine in yesterday and had to do some prelim first.

The phone is definitely awesome, but I had problems with light sensors at times. Hopefully getting a quick link with the computer and everything will be done.

The Wi-fi system is a bit odd for me since it doesn't have any 'off' button which irritates me when I'm trying to turn it off.

All in all however, good phone but mine was "Made In China"

I'll get you a quick pic snaps later on hopefully before tomorrow..

Cheers!

Thanks for the quick report. I wonder where those videos of the plant in Finland supposedly making the N97 came from... (since it seems to be made in China)...??

What do you mean "problems with light sensors"... could you perhaps elaborate...??

Thanks,

Have you gotten any response as to when they will ship, I ordered mine yesterday with overnight shipping, I haven't gotten any information as to when it's going to be shipped, even though it's "in stock". When I call NokiaUSA cs all they say is wait...
