Best high quality slim camera

Looking for the best slim-camera on the market, similar to the sony tx-55. Can anyone recommend something in the $400 price range and under?

The best small camera at the moment is probably the Canon S100. It may be a touch more than $400. http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canons100/

From personal experience I'd say the S95 is better than the S100. I sold my S95, purchased the S100 and ended up going back to the S95.

I'm not a camera expert, but apparently the change in sensor technology makes for poor(er) quality photos.

If a large optical zoom ratio is important to you, then obviously a 5x camera like the Canon S100 is not the "best."

I'm very fond of my S95. The S100's increased zoom range, etc. looked like a step up.

I have no problem recommending the S95.

How do you define "best"? Low light? Zoom range? Water/dust/shock proof?

What do you consider "slim"? (like what pocket do you want it to fit in?)

You can make huge strides in image quality if you don't need to fit it in euro-tight jean pockets.

I agree - I feel for that, and the GPS, and my experience with the S95 made me assume the S100 would be perfect.

ScottC what exactly were you noticing with the S100?

I was heavily looking at cameras this month to replace my aging Panasonic. I wanted something that was: larger than the standard 1/2.3 sensor, had a decent zoom, wasn't huge (so I eventually ruled out 4/3).

The S100 was a finalist, but I decided I did not quite want to spend that much and went with the FujiFilm Finepix F600EXR. The sensor is only a bit larger, but it had various features that I hope will help in low light situations. The zoom is way more than I need. The camera seemed nice when I went to play with it in a store. I ordered online ($100 difference from what the bricks and mortar store wanted) and should have it in a few days.
