Motorola Now Selling Unlocked GSM Phones

For those of you asking how to get a phone you can use with pre-paid SIM cards from different countries, Motorola will now sell you an unlocked phone.

If you look at http://www.store.motorola.com/mot/en...ockedgsmphones you'll find a range of 16 phones at prices from $49.99 to $249.99.

Just make sure that the phone has the GSM bands you need. For example, the $49.99 C139 phone there is listed as being only for use with 850 and/or 1900, which is what the US and several other countries in the Americas use. The rest of the GSM-using world uses 900 and/or 1800.

Some phones listed there do have all four GSM bands.

For those who prefer not to use Ebay, and/or who are concerned about warranty coverage for (potential) gray market phones, this is still a convenient alternative that may be worth the additional cost.

If you're in the market for a Europe-only (900/1800) phone, look at http://telestial.com

They'll sell you an unlocked GSM phone with charger and plug adapter for $50+shipping - including a $20 SIM!

An excellent point for which I thank you.

You really never know what you're buying with Ebay, do you?

In my experience, buying direct from Motorola is even better than buying direct from Verizon. Motorola is superb with service and is very liberal about warranty terms having fixed things a few times for me when either I had no proof of purchase or the warranty had expired.

I believe you get what you pay for.

Actually I have had excellent luck on Ebay. Bought a new Razr V3i for the bf with zero issues.

As well I have not had any problems getting Cingular to unlock the phones I've gotten from them.

I am happy you have had good luck with your purchases.

I respectfully suggest, however, that if a purchaser wants to be prudent, especially if one is pressed for time before a trip, buying direct from the manufacturer with a credit card is preferable to buying from an unknown seller on Ebay with a money order or Paypal.

Your opinion, of course, may differ.

CompUSA now selling unlocked GSM phones

I was in our local (San Antonio) CompUSA over the weekend and they are selling unlocked GSM phones.

They had an HTC Windows Mobile 6 phone that was pretty nice. Don't know how competitive the prices are.

They also list the phones for sale on their website http://www.compusa.com
