Question Best bag for Heathrow + European carriers?

My 22" roll-aboard just ain't gonna cut it in Europe where their carry-on standards are draconian comparied to the U.S. If I can make it pass the check-in agents, the security goons take one look at my rollaboard and I'm sent back down to have it checked in. So... I need one bag that can house my laptop and still give me as much space as possible for clothes (suit + extra shoes + shirts, pants, ties, etc.) while still being able to fit in those "sizers" at the London airports.

Last time I was in HKG, I saw someone with a bag that appeared to be a laptop bag + rollaboard all-in-one. The laptop bag zipped up into the bag itself. As much as I tried to see, I couldn't figure out who the manufacturer was. It looked like a smaller bag than my 22" expandable Travelpro, but I'm still not sure if it would meet the European "security goon" standards. If someone can give me some leads on the manufacturer of this bag, for starters, I would appreciate it.

Otherwise, any thoughts??

I too would love to find a bag that enabled me to take one set of business clothes (possibly a suit), dress shoes, and my laptop, assorted electronics and some files when I am flying to LHR or from LHR or worse yet, through LHR. I can't check the contents of my briefcase and I always hate to go without clothes for my first day's business meeting. [What happens if it gets lost? BA now loses 2.3% of bags]. I could do without taking an extra set of shoes if I had to and could just wear the dress shoes on the plane.

Does a wheeled bag that would carry a briefcase (or its contents) and a full set of business clothing exist?

I carry an American Tourister Mobile Office for all my trips of 2 nights or less. It has room for and side access to my laptop, room for 2 sets of business-casual clothes or 1 suit, shoes, personals, and outer file-folder pocket and gadget pocket. It meaures 18x10x14 and rolls with an internal collapsable pull-handle. I've had mine for 18 months and it might have another 6 months left before it's done. The top handle has lost rigidity and the ballistic-look nylon is starting to wear... but for $35 I can't complain about 2 years of use and will likely replace it with another one exactly like it.

For 3 night + trips I check a bag and carry a Targus rolling laptop bag that has room for a shirt and pants, though it's not the best for maintaining the fresh pressed look and also minimizes on room for files and documents (though I'm more apt to keep anything important on a password protected thumbdrive and re-print it once I get where I'm going).

I think the Heathrow baggage restrictions are 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22" x 17.7" x 9.8"). If so, the Briggs and Riley bag at 21 x 14 x 9 inches should fit, but I'd be interested in seeing if there is something closer to the size limit.

These may also work:

Yea, there are some other threads about this that have a lot of posts and talk about the issues of wheels vs no wheels. Im waiting for the backpack version of the Red Oxx Air Boss due in October but will likely get a Briggs and Riley 235 Suiter Tote (the non wheeled version of the one above) to try too. While not completely unsympathetic to the idea expressed by several that one should skip LHR because of the stupid rules, I find myself going to Cambridge several times a year and I just dont have many options other than BAA airports.

Thanks, I'm glad to learn that before I bought it. That B&R bag otherwise looks like the best choice around (assuming that you want wheels, as I do).

This may be another choice:

Briggs and Riley used to make a 19 or 20 inch rollaboard that might work better. I have one but havent tried it though LHR. Maybe someone else could comment.

Thanks GadgetFreak. You mentioned that there are other threads on this. I've tried searching but hit one that mentioned a Samsonite bag but nothing else. Any thoughts on how one might find the threads you recall?

Here are a few:

Tough search because many of the words are too small. I searched on my "GadgetFreak (as a user name) + luggage" and on "boss + luggage"

Check Brookstone. I think I remember seeing something like that while in the store in atlanta. Great idea. THe bag did not appear to be tumi or B & R quality, however it did look durable...
