Microsoft's latest PR: Zune Phone!
Up to their old tricks? Coincidental timing?
To put a prick in the current publicity Apple is gaining for its newest iPods, MS releases a statement or two on a possible future Zune Phone - while gently denying an acquisition of RIM and the BlackBerry.
I suppose it's standard practice (to shadow Apple) rather than a deliberate attempt to gain publicity for a non-existing, future possible update to a failed product.

Microsoft Floats Idea of Zune-Based Cell Phone
"It wouldn't be unreasonable to think at some point there might some integrated thing," Mindy Mount, chief financial officer of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, told investors at Citigroup's global technology conference.
Microsoft has sent mixed signals about the Zune phone. At the time it introduced the Zune last year, the company said a Zune phone was definitely part of its future plans.

1) Zune isn't really a failiure. Perhaps a PR failiure, but at 1 million shipped units its one of the better selling players on the market.
2) Microsoft didn't issue a statement; someone from them spoke at a tech conference for investors.
3) The "Zunephone" has been speculated on longer than the word "iPhone" has been around.
