I ended up paying $312 with no tax and free shipping (normally $380 but for some reason Google checkout applied a weird bonus discount).

I then spent an additional $20 on the h.264 codec and $23 for the mini dock so I could get video out (it's no longer on the headphone jack).

Apple.com says "Ships: By September 28th", so you may be out of luck... They have shipped stuff earlier, but I wouldn't bet on it this time

i have ordered it @ amazon and it says ships 24.9 the second one says 28.9 - 30.9 so i wonder if the 24.9 could be accurate!??

Sometimes I just HATE Apple.

NONE of the Video out devices I have work on the new Classic. Even the original Apple Composite AV cable won't work.

You NEED their $50 cable just to get video out of the darn thing.

And the cables are not available for 3-4 more weeks.

Stupid stupid company.

This is a mistake that Apple (and other companies) seem to keep making. If the original Mac had been an open system, instead of a proprietary one, Apple would have almost certainly have been able to eclipse IBM for PCs -- it was a slicker, smoother and less problematic platform than the Intel-based PC. It's the same mistake Sony made with the Betamax. Notwithstanding the discussion in the other thread about porn, Sony's insistence on restrictive licensing of the patents related to the Beta standard are what enabled VHS machines to sell for substantially less.

Well, I had heard they were blocking the use of some third party video display stuff, but to stop supporting their own frikkin AV cable is just mindboggling.

They must have a real bunch of idiots making these decisions. Even if I wanted to drop another $50 on a cable, they don't even have it yet.

Fantastic - the iTouch ipod is exactly what I wanted - I knew Apple would come through - again!

It's basically the iPhone without the crappy phone and the crappy ATT network. Of course, you will need to find free WiFi hotspots to use the internet (or pay ridiculous WiFi access fees), but that's becoming increasingly easier these days (e.g. enjoyed free surfing on my laptop during my brief wait at LAS yesterday ^)

I have a lot of old CDs but haven't tranferred any of the music to an ipod, so this will be a good excuse to join the 21st century. And finally a good excuse for chucking the shoddy Palm.

Do you guys really watch a lot of video on your puny ipods? It is really hard for me to watch video on anything smaller than my 50" flatscreen. But I guess you do what you have to do when you are stuck on a plane.

When I want traveling video, I usually use my laptop. However, I've watched a couple of movies on my 5G video iPod and it wasn't bad at all. It wasn't, of course, a cinematic experience. However, movies are visual stories, and I had no trouble at all getting absorbed into narrative.

Being eclectic, I like to shuffle all 800+ CDs when listening, so for me, it is a "must have" for enuf space. Besides, synching all the time is a waste of time for a consultant that charges by the hour. :grin

Back in 1976, I would take a cassette recorder (these things were big, then -- about a foot long, 5 inches wide and 4 inches thick) and a pair of headphones (also very large -- none of those small "open" phones then). I'd listen to cassette tapes in the air. This drew some curious looks from the stewardesses (they weren't called "flight attendants" then) but, for the most part, they said nothing. I think then, as now, they liked the fact that it kept me occupied and out of their hair.

Needless to say, I bought a portable CD player very early on. I used to carry a small CD holder that could hold about 30 CDs. These became smaller and lighter and I upgraded several times.

As soon as the first CD-based MP3 players came out, I bought one. At 128 kbps, I could put about 12 albums on each CD, which meant I could easily carry hundreds of albums with me. From the CD-based mp3 player, I moved up to a Creative Jukebox with a 40 gigabyte hard drive. This was a little larger and heavier than the CD-based mp3 player but, of course, allowed me to dump all those mp3 CDs. When the Creative started to die, I bought a 5th Generation iPod with a 50 gigabyte drive. That's what I use now -- and will continue to use unless Apple puts out an iTouch with a lot of storage.
I'll second that! My 1st portable CD player was a Panasonic from the 80s that weighed about 5 pounds, and the clip-on battery (about 6"Wx3"Hx2"D) lasted about an hour or 2. We've come along way, baby!

Well I have decided on the iTouch with only one concern - nano-scratchability

I bought a 4 gig nano when they firstcame out (in fact I bought a micro and it died after a week and then the nano came out so I upgraded to nano) and the thing is scratched to hell The itouch looks like it is the same exterior so that is definitely a concern.

I don't want or need my entire music collection with me when I travel and at the moment that is only 12 gig anyway It will be very useful to watch TV shows on my one hour commute to work. Even when travelling I can whack a few things on there and that will be enough for transits etc. Onboard I watch tv on the laptop or the inflight movies (I endeavour to fly on mostly AVOD enabled aircraft).

One of the deal makers for me was the wifi. I spend a lot of time in lounges so being able to access the net without booting up the laptop will be a boon. I am just wondering how easy it will be to use. If you can get webmessenger working on it it would be a great way to quickly catch up with mrssimongr and tell where I am

I am in NY next week until Thursday 28 Sep so will duck into the apple store on 5th Ave and see if they are available whilst I am still there - sure hope so. Would be nice to get it there cheaper than Oz

The capacity is not perfect but it will just mean tailoring my use to the available resources. This will not be a primary video player - I would have to be Tom Thumb for that to be the case but this will work well for me.

All you guys needing the 160gig have very different needs so obviously this is not for you. That's why they have different machines I hope you pick one up when the 30 gig version comes out and I am onto the next bit of shiny

Keep in mind that Apple is not providing free wi-fi connection for the iPod Touch so you will have to find a free hotspot (was happy to find them at both LAS and PHX) or pay for a connection (unless it is included in your lounge membership).

Fortunately free WiFi is rapidly proliferating in urban areas and hotels

I just did a long drive and had my 10+ days of music on shuffle on the ipod connected car sound system. Way cool!

But I still want an iTouch.
