Apologies, but at that level I'm a software person. My advice on tape drives would not be trustable.

Mechanically I think they're about the same. I've not noticed any difference in the frequency of issues with either drive type. All of the LTOs I have are also Quantum under the hood too.

Thats not what I wanted to hear... I was hoping to hear something positive
about the LTOs.. I have a 100 Tape multi drive library To add in one of my
datacenters... I was hoping it was better. in any case.. I have
multiple drives in it.. just incase if one fails.. we should be fine.
(we can still finish the full backup within a few hours)

PS: Thats PX506 with LTO configuration

Well, larger tape libraries usually come with or have for purchase a service plan of some type with anywhere from 4 hour to NBD turnaround. I'd suggest you take that out on this thing. I've worked in datacenters with libraries 50-100 times the size of what you're describing and I don't have a recollection of hearing about or seeing a repairman at the libraries/silos that often. If your backup schedule is such that losing one drive for a night would send the whole thing to hell, you ought to purchase an additional drive to have some spare capacity.

We have alternate backups.. we have disk based backups that are
geograpihcally separated, but I'd like to keep the service calls to a minimnum.
Dont like dealing with the calls and escorting the Field Engineers in and out
of the location that are in other cities.

We do have 4 hours response time (some special deal company wide)
but we have enough fault tolerance that we dont need to get anything from
tape ever.. only time we had to go back to the tapes.. was right after
