Voicestream was not the beginning of T-mobile. Powertel was and older carrier that was TDMA and became Voicestream in a merger while it was still TDMA and then converted to TDMA.

For informational purposes only.

what was that about? Did someone say VS was the beginning o t-mobile in the US?

And I believe that voicestream, bought powertel before the deutsche telekom purchase of voicestream. At the time, voicestream had bought all the GSM carriers in north america, after having been spun OUT of western wireless as a GSM pureplay, and was working on increasing their stake in microcell in canada, the only other GSM carrier in North America.

You asked how they started and what they were before GSM.

I think this is not off-topic....

I regularly buy SIM cards for my spare Nokia so that the hotel can call me when my cab's here, etc, etc.

I was in Budapest happily buying a card when they asked for my passport. I'd never had that happen before but they explained that their is actually a phone book of mobile phone numbers and they just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing the Hungarian equivalent of "Richard Hurtz."

Anyone run into that before? I passed on the SIM b/c I didn't have my passport, so just relied on my Cingular phone forwarding. But still.

I think they asked for a passport in Shanghai. Cant remember for sure, however.

I was asked for my passport when I bought a brand new Vodafone SIM in Deutschland. This was from a Vodafone factory store.

SOOOO, question........ I have a T-Mobile phone in the US. If I want to get a pre-paid SIM in the UK, also from T-Mobile, do I need to unlock my phone, or will it work because they're both T-Mobile?

Currently I just use T-Mobile roaming while in the UK for a couple weeks at a time. I'm not a heavy user. But do have trouble curbing the text habit.......

I dont think it will work without unlocking. But sometimes it is flakey. By SDA worked with a Virgin Mobile SIM without unlocking but not with Orange. I still havent figured that one out.

I don't know the answer to the question about T-Mobile.

Ireland, Italy and the UK do ask for a passport. I will be able to tell you about Germany and the Netherlands soon.

germany

germany, yes post #105

as for the unlocking, if you are a t-mobile user in the US, and have been for several months under contract, they will usually unlock the phone for you. Give the customer service a call, tell them the deal "i'm going to buy a t-mo card in the UK, since I will be there a WHILE and I certainly wouldn't use my US t-mo account, will you unlock the phone for me?"

they DO do this, so if for some reason the first person says no, call back.

I dont even give them this much info, I tell them I want to unlock my phone. They have asked if I am travelling out of the country and I replied yes, but it hasnt been a big deal. They are quite cooperative. I have done it 2 or 3 times.
