"hacked" ("jailbroken") and "unlocked" are two entirely different things. The poster you were responding to just wanted to unlock. Unlocking a phone does not impact its warranty, and bringing it in for service there is no way that they can tell you had it unlocked using an "informal" service, or if you had it unlocked by your carrier or bought it unlocked in the first place, so no warranty issues. Having a hacked phone is a different story.

Hmmmm. I notice the "3" data plan is being reported as very slow by some users....anyone got more info?

Am thinking about this as a backup to my Nomi card...

TalkMobile World Pay as you Go SIM

* GPRS/Data charges Up to 50p a day (for up to 10MB, then only £2 per additional megabyte)

Not great voice rates, tho...

* Calls are 20p per minute for the first three minutes every day and 15p per minute after that. Texts to UK mobiles are only 10p each

* Texts to International numbers cost 15p per message. Pay As You Go, no minimum term, simply top-up when you need more credit. Cheapest mobile internet rate available

* Excluding calls made while roaming and numbers beginning 08 which are charged at 25p per minute

* International texts 15p per message Standard UK landlines, mobiles and voicemail, 20p per minute then 15p per minute after the first 3 minutes each day.

Am trying to find another source that'll ship to USA. Amazon.co.uk will (all you have to do is enter your regular US-based Amazon login and password), but the charge is nearly US$40.

Guess I could wait till I get there and try to find it, but I have no idea who sells TalkMobile...

Thanks a bunch - I'm flying into London Heathrow from the US and then flying to 4-5 different countries and the Vodafone promotion seems awesome. How do I go about getting it though - Pick up a sim card from the airport or find a Vodafone store or a grocery store (and add the promotions online? Call Vodafone to get passport). Sorry for not knowing much about how the retail structure for mobiles is setup in the UK

Question Liability of a Lost Postpaid SIM?

In advance of a recent multi-nation European trip I bought a pre-paid Passport Lite SIM. The card cost only $8, but minutes are very expensive (~ $1/minute, incoming and outgoing calls, and it's even a clumsy ringback service).

I went with the prepaid SIM because of concern that losing a phone with postpaid SIM could lead to no-telling-how-much liability. Is this a valid concern? If you lose a postpaid phone, can you end up owing some incredible amount of money? Or, do the card providers have some sort of maximum amount that you can talk before they cut you off?

Edited to add: Related discussion, and horror stories, at Huge cell phone charges

UK Monthly SIM cards

I will be in the UK for a few months and am exploring options for cell service. The SIM card that seems good for me is this one from Vodafone:

http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/pric...T.mc_evt=click

But I have a question. It says the service requires an existing cell phone number. What if I don't have a UK cell phone number? Will they still provide a phone number and SIM or would I not qualify for this program?

Can anyone from the UK give feedback on this service, as it appears to be very cost-effective!

Here's the TalkMobile website: http://www.talkmobile.co.uk/pay_as_you_go.html

Note that putting "only" in front of an expensive option does not make it inexpensive.

It's very very easy to transfer 1MB of data, and not hard at all to move several GB (say, by watching video). At the quoted rate, 1GB would cost £2000.

Their website states:

"Unlimited Internet"

"A fair usage policy of 25MB per day applies to all mobile internet browsing for 30p per day."

Methinks if the same people ran a restaurant, they would offer an "all you can eat buffet" with a limit of 4 oz. of food!

I'm not sure if you'll be making mainly domestic calls from the UK or also some international calls, but if it's the latter, I recently picked up a SIM card from Lyca Mobile which had INCREDIBLE international rates (e.g. 4p per minute to the US). Their rates within the UK are not the best, but if you're going to be doing any substantial international calling from your mobile, check out their website...it has all their rates listed and many of them are outstanding. I understand this same group also offers cards in Italy and the Netherlands and are planning to expand elsewhere on the continent. BTW, I was able to purchase the card from a shop in London and they required no phone #, address, or any personal info whatsoever.

For calling, all carriers are really cheap!

"Telia Talk" (red logo) is around $0.83/min to US and $0.74/min to EU...
TDC "Taletid" (dark blue logo) is around $0.83/min to US and $0.74/min to EU
Telenor "Taletid Startkit" (blue logo) is $0.15/min* to US and EU is $0.10-0.50/min depending on country!
* Telenor require you to refill at least once befor you get the cheap rate, otherwise it will be like $1.80/min to all countries!

So my suggestion will be look for a Telenor store or stand, and get the Startkit there and buy one refill card at the same time. You will find the Telenor stands in most bigger supermarkets (Føtex), and the "Startkit" is avalible at even more places, and there you also find refills... I can tell you that this price $0.15 is VERY cheap for calling to the US! Calling to Sweden and Norway is the same rate, even though they are our neighbours... Calling China is even cheaper - like $0.12/min

For all the above - it is free incoming call and free incoming text! They all have some sort of "connection fee" and it varies around $0.05-0.10! Some of them you are able to use internationally, but not the Telenor, but you will most likely have to refill them before leaving Denmark, as they cannot be used internationally below a certain balance!

If you are data hungry, buy the 3(three/tre) "Reload Data" for about $28-30, and it will give you one week of free data use in Denmark and Sweden (on 3's network)! The coverage in Denmark is very good and the speed is around 3.6 mbit/s down and 384 kbit/s up! After one week, you can refill it like a normal prepaid SIM, just find a 3 store...

Hope it paints a picture for future use...

Might be that webpages are not to be found in english, but they DO speak english, both in stores and if you should call them!

The Vodafone summer roaming promotion is good til the end of August.

Get a PAYG SIM card sent to your hotel, activate Passport and Vodafone International Calling, then you should be able to get 5p/min to the USA in both locations.

Keep in mind that if you're in France after 31st Aug, you'll be paying roaming charges on top. But before then, I think this could be your best bet.

I just noticed that you said you'll need a phone, too - entry-level GSM phones are dead cheap in the UK. (e.g. 10ukp in Carphone Warehouse)

UK info - various

Some comments / answers to UK points above:

Talk Mobile (www.talkmobile.co.uk) is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) owned by Carphone Warehouse (large mobile retailer in UK) and operating on the Vodafone network.

Lyca (www.lycamobile.co.uk) is an MVNO operating on the Orange network. Lyca targets specific markets that demand good rates to non-UK numbers so it tends to be very competitive on non-UK calls. Lyca's biggest competitor is probably Lebera Mobile (www.lebara-mobile.co.uk). SIMs for both of these products are very easy to find in larger cities such as London but may be difficult to find in rural areas. Their mobile UK > non-UK rates tend to be among the best.

The UK 3 network (www.three.co.uk) has good data speeds in areas where there is actual 3 coverage but 3's 3G coverage is nowhere near as extensive as the other UK networks' 2G coverage. If you are mainly visiting larger UK cities the 3 data offering can be good value. At the time of writing you can walk into a 3 store in the UK and purchase a data dongle for 9.99 GBP and add 15 GBP to the account for 3Gb of data access over 30 days. That is pretty good value for 25 GBP if you are spending a lot of time in the major cities but not much good if you are spending 14 days in North Wales.

A word of warning regarding 3 SIMs. 3 SIMs sold for broadband access (e.g. with the dongle) will not ever connect to 2G networks such Orange or O2 - not even for voice calls. If you want to use 3 for voice calls get a non-broadband "voice" SIM - those SIMs will roam onto other UK networks if 3 is not available. All 3 UK's current SIMs will NOT WORK IN 2G HANDSETS. Some older 3 UK SIMs did work in 2G handsets but the ones being supplied now do not.

During my recent trip I have been using 3 UK in a dongle for my laptop and Orange (www.orange.co.uk) in a PDA for voice and handheld data. The Orange data rate is also quite attractive (5 GBP for 1 week of access) and has the advantage that it can fall back to 2G when 3G is not available.

I am in the UK for another couple of days - if anybody has specific questions please PM.

Prepaid SIM in Germany

There are many food discounter chains in Germany like Aldi, Lidl, Plus, etc. They all offer Prepaid SIM cards. Just ask at the cashier and they'll hand you a starter package. You can also buy airtime vouchers there.
The prices within Germany vary between 9-15 cent (eurocent), a MB of Data use is usually 24 eurocent. If you go from Germany to other european countries you can roam with this SIM card for an affordable price. Also incoming calls are not to pricy.
