I have an iPhone and traveling to Europe next week. After checking on www.mobal.com it looks to me like the AT&T rates are for calling back to the US or receiving calls from the US are pretty comparable. Am I missing anything?

get the world traveller plan, it should lower your rate to .79$ a minute, in or out. Also, the downside is that any voicemail that comes in, 1-2-3, etc, will be billed a round turn, inbound call and VM alert, which will end up being billed at 2x.79$, which is really annoying, so you wake up in the morning, four new VMS, and you are hit with 4x2x.79$, just to KNOW that there are four new VM's, this is one of the things I hate the MOST about this sort of travelling plan.
Of course if you don't get the travel plan, then it is .99$, or more per timex2x4, etc.
I normally suspend my vm before leaving, only answer the calls that come in or I need to make, and use a european sim for the rest.

And, yes your are correct; Vodafone have a 3 month promotion going, so no charge for incoming calls. This is a very good offer, although it is planned to expire end August.
Will not need it then, the new EU requirements will be in effect and it should be lower and still no incoming. EU requirements are no roaming, pay home rate in EU.

What would you recommend for a trip to London, Paris, Brussels? I wouldn't be making that many phone calls (almost all within those areas) and would most likely use less than 50mb of data.

Some parts of this offer are very good. I've signed up as I will get lower roaming rates than my regular provider. I can live with a new number, though there's the option of keeping my existing number.
New customers get the Simply rate - 20p per minute in the UK to call and no charge for receiving. For June-August 2009, those rates apply to/from 35 European countries (including Australia and New Zealand!). On the face of it, domestic calls are expensive but those roaming rates are great.
But there's more. By signing up to Vodafone International (not sure if you need a UK address for this), calls from the UK to the US, Canada and China cost 5p per minute, and calls to a huge list of countries cost 5p (landlines)/15p (cellphones) with some other countries at 10p/20p and 30p/30p.
This is not time limited so looks like a permanent offer. Beware! If you're not signed up to Vodafone International, calls to Europe cost £1 per minute and other countries £1.50 per minute!

The international SIM cards for Verizon Blackberry world phones are free right now if you call customer service and ask them to notate your account, if you go to the store they will try and charge you 30 bucks for the card
I looked at the Gevey Plus 2, am I correct that that unlocks the iPhone? I havent bothered to unlock mine, and when in the UK last time got a USB modem from 3G and a prepaid SIM. It was a ridiculous price, like 15 pounds for 2 gb of data. Less than a monthly subscription here. I also have Boingo PDA WiFi and the 20 gb per month international data plan from ATT. I was planning to just use that but if the Gevey worked in the iPhone without prior unlocking that would certainly be an option. Thanks.
Yes, the Gevey card/film/whatever temporarily unlocks the iPhone (until you take it out), so long as you don't upgrade to firmware 3.0 when it comes out. I can confirm this works well, and you will be able to use offline maps of cities you're in, and have access to EDGE-speed data. Even online maps, if you don't mind EDGE speed data. This is a fantastic option if you're traveling-- Google Maps was very handy; as well as PDFs you mail to yourself, and of course Tube and Metro, etc.

Mobal's per minute rates are expensive, but the advantage is they have no contract and no "roaming" -- after you buy the phone, you only pay for the calls you make. If you only make $20 worth of calls in a year, that's all you pay. If you just let the phone sit around turned off for six months between trips, you pay nothing.
It's also an advantage over some phones that you have only one phone that works in a zillion countries, including (if you get the expensive one ) the US -- you don't need to juggle SIM cards.

Two questions:
1. Can you combine this with the Vodafone Passport promo?
2. If you get a freedom pack (£10 = 100 mins and 300 texts, £15 = 200 mins and 600 texts, £20 = 300 mins and unlimited texts), can you call abroad on Vodafone International using this credit?

Do you have a link to the new rules and when do they start ?
