This summer we will be in Europe for about a month. Starting in Stockholm and then taking a cruise down to Dover and spending another week and a half in France. Not looking to make too many calls but need to check on the family a few times.
After looking around, had thought about getting a United Mobile SIM card but it looks like they just went out of business. Anyone have any other suggestions?
By the way, our "home" cell is with AT&T and, from what I can tell, the charge to make a call from most of Europe back to the U.S. is about $1.29 plus taxes.
I already have an unlocked cellie for europe, but I haven't used it since 2007. I'm going to Paris. Should I just get a SIM card there? How much can I expect to spend? Where can I get one? Sorry, but it's been a while since I've dealt with this issue. Thanks!

Search this forum for information on Orange (a French cellular carrier) and their Mobicarte prepaid service as well as FNAC, a French chain similar to Best Buy.
If I had a phone that was not used for two years, I'd be worried about the battery.
I'm moving to the UK next month and I have an unlocked Nokia E65 that I will bring with me. The Vodafone Passport looks fine for my voice call needs, but I also want to use data on my phone. Any similar plans for Europe-wide data? I need to check email, sync calendars, etc.
I had a Vodafone NL SIM last year and using even tiny amounts of data chewed up my credit at a ridiculous rate.
Something to keep in mind with using sim in turkey, I was told by 2 vodaphone reps that if u use foreign tel with turkey sim after 1 week or 10 days it will lock the tel out of the network. The sim will work in turkey cell telephones but not foreign cell phones including unlocked usa or european phones. Anyone else have this issue? Dosent matter to me anymore b/c I left today but this may be concern for others.
Also, it seems that when buying sims it is most useful to go to company owned story, get a business card of the store & sales rep and pick a store nearby to where u stay or hang out.
What is best German & Danish sim deal out there now? Any special issures?

3 UK has a prepaid (and postpaid) data plan. I purchased a USB dongle that came with a sim card. After activation with the dongle, I was able to use the SIM in my 3G phone successfully.
There is an internet thread in a UK mobile home website that is following data in Europe with UK SIMs. As I recall the UK SIM could be used in Austria at UK rates, but not Germany.

Be very careful when using data roaming. It can get v. expensive indeed!
3 does indeed have a good deal, but only in the (few) countries with their own network, e.g. Italy.
Best option for data roaming with UK SIM is probably either a roaming bolt on (either O2 or Vodafone), or a Voda USB stick, with EU roaming at fixed price @ £8.50/day. Better still, use free wi-fi wherever you can find it - or a local Internet connection, e.g. in a cafe or hotel.
For voice, Voda Passport is not as cheap as it looks. There's a fixed cost of 64p (plus VAT) for each call made or received. best deal in my experience is the O2 'My Europe Extra' @ £4.25/mont on top f nay business contract tariff. This provides unlimited free incoming calls throughout EU, and discounted calls to/from all EU countries.
Verizon is offering the international SIM card for the blackberry 8830 for free right now. You have to call and ask the phone customer service people to notate you account or the folks at the store will try and charge you 30 bucks for it. Make sure you call first and you will get it free. Saved a couple friends the 30 bucks in the last week as well. Useful to grab the world kit now if you have that phone. I just happen to call when I was waiting in line and bored. Lucky break

So what does Verizon's international SIM get you, in terms of data/voice service abroad - any savings of note?
I'm trying to get the AT&T Blackberry unlimited international data plan, but it's only offered to businesses registered in the US...
