I can't find my Router/WAP - but it works...

Greetings,

I have Thomson Speedtouch 530 ADSL modem, and a Linksys WRT54G 4 port router/WAP. Since the modem is also a router, I've set it as the DHCP server (range 10.0.0.XX to 10.0.0.YY), and set the Linksys to "router" rather than "gateway" mode - as recommended if there already is a router in the chain. I also disabled the DHCP server on the Linksys. So the Linksys is just a WAP, and the connection between the Thomson and the Linksys is via one of the network ports, not the internet port.

But - when I attempt to change the IP address of the Linksys from 192.168.1.1 to 10.0.0.ZZ, the "save settings" is followed by "settings successful" and then access to the Linksys via http (192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.ZZ) is lost. It still works though!!

The only way to get access to the Linksys is to reset it.

Tried Linksys support and they don't have any answers, but we all know there's much more informed people on FT - so hence this question.

Your thoughts/suggestions appreciated...

I have a similar setup, and mine works fine. First question...after changing the IP address on the Linksys, are you able to "ping" the Linksys? I know you can't hit the config page(s), but are you able to initiate any kind of communication with it other than the successful use of wireless Internet access?

- If you can get into the modem, can you list the clients table?, ... sometimes called DHCP Clients Table. That table will show the IP address of all clients.

- All the Linksys routers and WAPs have a default IP address to which they revert under expected conditions (first power up, hard reset, etc.), and sometimes under unexpected conditions. Take a look at the manual (available online) for your model, and check the default IP address to see if it somehow reverted to it.

Dumb question: is the fixed IP address that you assigned to the Linksys WRT-54G one that has been duplicated to another computer on your network by the modem's DHCP server?

FWIW, my setup is very similar to yours, and even with my modem having the ability to act as a router, I've always found it a little more secure to use my Linksys WRT-54G as my primary router.

DSL modem --> Linksys' WAN port
My computers --> Linksys' router / switch ports

I have my Linksys get an IP address from the DSL modem for WAN / Internet purposes. The Linksys also serves addresses with it's DHCP server to my comptuers and other nodes. This enables me to use the firewall and port forwarding options available in the Linksys.

It's just ONE way to accomplish the task, not necessarily the best way.

Thanks guys for the good thoughts.

1. There's only 1 IP - that of my notebook (10.0.0.X1)
2. No reply on pings from 192.168.1.1 (default), 10.0.0.ZZ (the changed IP for the Linksys) - no comms from the Linksys

I might try a new one - disable DHCP on the Speedtouch, and make the Linksys the Router. Will report back...(hopefully!!)

Success

Disabling DHCP on the Speedtouch and enabling DHCP on the Linksys - didn't work.

OK - try again from first principles. Wiped everything, and rebuilt the configuration of the Linksys, wired, with the Speedtouch disconnected. When it came time to change the IP address of the Linksys, I lost comms. Turned off the Linksys, turned off the PC, connected the Speedtouch, turned on the Linksys, turned on the PC - and voila - all working.

So the Speedtouch is the router, the Linksys is just a dumb ol' WAP.

Do you know what caused all this problem? I tried to change from WEP to WPA without checking that my wireless card in my notebook could support WPA...

Thank you all for scratching your heads on this one!

Aha! No wonder you couldn't get in to the Linksys: no wireless connectivity.

Congrats on figuring this one out ^
