vacationing in upstate NY town that has no service from *any* cell phone company
last year, I spend a couple of weeks in the summer at this upstate NY town that had absolutely no service from *any* cell phone company. Not Verizon, not T-Mobile, not AT&T... nothing. the place I stayed at had no wifi and not wired internet, except in the main building.
well... I'm going there again this summer.
Are there other options? Is $atellite phone out of reach for most folks?

Where is this? I'd love to go to a place like that. ^
You could easily rent a satellite phone if you absolutely needed an emergency connection to the outside world. Actually buying a phone and subscribing to a service is still somewhat pricey...the plans look an awful like like an early 90's cell phone plan. (Limited numbers of voice minutes...that kind of thing. And *very* limited data, as you might expect.)

Sounds like heaven. Put on a "I can't be reached until xxx, if the matter is urgent please contact yyy" autoreply on email, and give a few trusted people the place's land line number in case of a personal emergency.
Relax and enjoy.

Load up the kindle... scratch that, grab a few books and a crossword book, and relax. As much as I'm attached to my iPhone, this place does sound great.
If you're that desperate to remain in contact, satellite phones work in most places. You do need a clear line of sight to the sky though.

How far's the main building from your room? A couple of wireless->Ethernet bridges with external high-gain antennas and an access point inside your room may work--if they'll let you install that stuff, that is.
BTW I'm a bit surprised Verizon doesn't have coverage somewhere, considering they have the reputation of working everywhere and all.
