Also depends if your wife's Nokia has a USB port.

First, thanks for both of those suggestions. I would have gone with the SIM mode, but I'm instead going to go with option 3 - make her do it on the computer. The reason, though, is so that she actually sorts these contacts or at the very least trims out some of the years of old ones that don't work anymore. This will be a housecleaning exercise, I think.
And further to my comments about the camera: she grabbed the phone to take some pictures in low light last night and while they were not spectacular, they came out much better than I'd otherwise have believed. The LED flash is also really bright. Almost hurts my eyes when you turn it on a foot from my eyes bright.
EDIT: I mentioned how people were interested in hearing the opinions of a new Android user and the exact words were: Beautiful, easy to use, I love it.

Answering my own earlier query: I finally got an email yesterday that essentially blamed the weather down in Texas [along with overwhelming demand] for the delay, even though I ordered about 30 minutes after they went live. They now promise to overnight before Dec 17th!

Upgraded to kitkat, installed the GEL launcher to get OK Google to work on my home screen, just like the more expensive Moto X [voice recognition is excellent]. And battery life is good.
So far, after 2+ wks, like my first android toy. ^

I read in Times of India that a dual SIM version is coming out in January. I'm curious if it supports all four HSPA frequencies. If it does, I'm tempted.

Imagine a Toggle Mobile SIM in slot two with an ATT or TMobile International data sim in slot one! Talk about a global roaming area. Even in the US, I'd be tempted to route my voice calls to Toggle and save minutes.

Verizon Wireless will be selling Moto G on their prepaid plans for $100 starting January 9. This will be a CDMA model without LTE radio.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/news/...-g-prepay.html
Verizon does not offer many choices in prepaid plans for smartphones. There are only two plans to choose from: $60 or $70 per month, but that's another problem altogether.
While there are MVNO that use Verizon's network such as PagePlus, Verizon does not allow their prepaid phones to be activated by a MVNO.

The Boost Mobile (Sprint MVNO) version of the Moto G can currently be had from HSN for $99 after $30 rebate. I would make sure Sprint service is acceptable in your area and where you travel before going down this road, but the plans are attractive (unlimited everything for $55/month, monthly price drops $5/month for every 6 months of on-time bill payment down to as low as $40/month). If you're comfortable with Sprint coverage, though, I would probably still urge you to go with the $300 Moto X on Republic Wireless.
The Verizon Prepaid Moto G will also be available on Jan. 9 for $99, but the Verizon Prepaid plans aren't all that attractive ($60/month for unlimited talk/text and 2gb data, $10 more for 4gb data) and you can't activate Verizon Prepaid phones on Page Plus or other Verizon MVNOs.
I'm really interested to see what Republic Wireless does with the Moto G... $50? Free?

Just saw this, but yes, it's actually straightforward but odd. There are two language settings, one main system setting and one directly in the Google now app. So the Google now setting is the one you'd change to Chinese, although if you're using the GEL I'm not sure if that will stop okay Google commands, in case the language needs to be US English for them to work? Worth a try though.
So when I ask in English for weather outside, get the normal response. In Chinese, it will bring up menu of sites in Chinese to check the weather...
Thanks!

Changed as instructed, now has 'semi' bi-lingual functions. In English, it will act as normal Google Now, open apps, etc. In Chinese it reverts to search function.

My son got me a SIM-free moto G for Christmas. I'm delighted with it, and will use it in countries where my local SIM comes with a good data rate. Otherwise, there's wi-fi or my good old basic Nokia.

Possibly pentaband WCDMA 3G support?

From some photos, the model number looks to be XT1033 which is also mentioned here. Quad band support listed, dropping 1700, but that still beats seeing only one 3G band rumored/supported...
