What is the best smaller pack pound for pound?

Have a couple of high capacity packs which will charge iPads but are heavy and take long to charge.

Looking for something I could slip in the pocket with the phone to charge during the day.

I have this. It's 1720 MA but for $15 it's worth it. It's only Micro USB though.

I like the Limefuel L60X (6000 mAh currently $30). While it's not the smallest one out there, all the other "slim/compact" ones only have a 1A output. When you're out and about and want a quick charge, the L60X's 1.8A output will make a difference, and I think this is an important consideration along with the size/cost issues.

Am I the only one buying the case/charger separately and installing my own 18650 batteries? I bought 2x18650 case/chargers for <$3 on eBay and put in some old 2200mAh Panasonic batteries I had lying around, but you could get new authentic 2600mAh Samsung cells for ~$7/pair and have a 5200mAh pack for ~$10, or even a 10000mAh pack for <$20.

I've got that in white, so far I'm happy with it.

I have this, but in black:

http://www.amazon.com/Compact-10000m...r+usb+recharge

I had it w/me whilst i was on travel this past January to Tokyo and Manila. I was able to charge my SG Note3 a good 3 times before it was exhausted. VERY worth the price....problem if you call it would be that it takes a couple of hrs to charge to a full battery...

Some of the Ankers have a single port as opposed to the multiple ports that other battery packs have.

Apparently it does some kind of intelligent switching so it charges at up to 3 amps.

iPhone comes with a 1 amp charger, iPad a 2 amp charger. But in other battery packs, you use the 2 amp port anyways and it will charge the iPhone faster.

Anyone with one of these 1-port Ankers find that they charge the smaller devices like phones more slowly than 2 amp chargers?

Maybe it's kind of moot because the one I have in mind is like 5 ounces and has 6000 mAh, geared more for phones than tablets. So the idea is that I could put this in a jacket pocket if necessary, along with the phone, to charge it.

I have larger capacity packs for my iPad Mini as well but that is 10.5 ounces and really would be too bulky and heavy in a pocket.

The iPhone 5/5S can only charge at 1 amp, while the iPhone 6/6 Plus will charge at up to 2 amps, so it depends on which phone you're talking about. Plugging an iPhone 5 into a 2A charger does not make a difference, it can only draw a max of 1A.

If you're talking about an iPhone 6 (or iPad) then yeah, the 2A chargers are more desirable for quick charges while on-the-go; and that's the main reason I bought the Limefuel L60X that I posted about above.

With anything using 18650 cells (most in the 0.7-1.0" thick range, most of the "lipstick" style packs, most not advertised as LiPo or Lithium-Polymer) the battery cells themselves should handle 2-3A without any problem, but the electronics that convert to 5v and regulate output voltage at the cells' voltage drops are usually the bottleneck on current.

Many of the Anker packs do have intelligent ports that will provide the max amperage the device can draw, while others have a 1A and a 2.1/2.4A port labeled discretely

I have two battery packs, one for daily emergency backup, and one that i can when taking trips overseas.

This smaller unit even charges my iPad air: http://www.amazon.com/6000mAh-Ultra-...ds=anker++6000

The larger one has been reviewed by others:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Surprisingly both are priced at $29.99 for now.

I got the PNY T7800 7800mAh power pack a few months ago on sale at OfficeMax for $25 and have been very happy with it. It's pretty light and small for the amount of power, and will essentially completely charge my iPad 2 with a little juice left over. It has both 1A and 2.4A outputs so charging is quicker with iDevices. Minimalist design with a single button which lights up 1-4 LEDs to indicate charge, automatically charges your device or itself when you attach. Certainly a reasonable size/weight to carry in a pants or jacket pocket (or a purse). Less than 6 ounces based on the shipping weight.

Walmart has it for sale at $24.97. http://www.walmart.com/ip/PNY-T7800m...rPack/39856413

Product Dimensions: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.9 inches
Shipping Weight: 6.4 ounces
ASIN: B00MWNEDXI

Thanks for the heads up. Even if the coupon still isn't good, there'll be something along shortly that'll cut the price down. Since I've gone to one of these hybrid laptops, I've found it easy to get a full day's (IOW, almost 24 hours) uptime out of the onboard battery and a good USB pack. With this, I'll have more than enough power--until, of course, the next generation comes along!
