Can I share my gogo connection with my seatmate using iPhone hotspot setting?

Unless you jailbreak, no you can't tether wifi signal.
You'll need something like MyWi or PdaNet.

Because in order to turn tethering on your cell phone's wifi radio needs to be in a different mode. You can't get a wifi signal and share it with a phone. I've never been able to do that.

Plus, technically I don't think you can have something broadcasting a wifi signal on a plane. You can't even use bluetooth headphones on a plane.

I think you mean "legally" or "regulatorally"*, not "technically".

*not that it's a word

I've learned better than to use the word "legally" on FT, it takes the conversation in a whole other direction.

Yes you can over Bluetooth / USB, but not over wifi (you can either receive OR transmit a wifi signal, not both at the same time).

Well, depends on the wireless chip in question. But yes, this is true for the iPhone.

Ahh, my bad. Forgot about the Bluetooth / USB options. So yes, you can over Bluetooth / USB. See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4517
