you should do what i do....when the tso comes to escort you for your "shoe shine", make sure that they ask the wtmd gatekeeper if you alarmed or not and get the correct answer. i have had on one occasion, the wtmd gatekeeper flat out lie and say "yes" ("not pretty" when i heard that) and on another occasion they said, "i can't remember" . simple solution was for me to walk back thru the wtmd but still....

BEFORE I get to the check point or while I am still standing in line I will have organized my belongings to make things as quick as possible for me and others. I like to wear big watches and belt buckles. My wallet has a metallic clip. If I use another wallet it will have coins in it. It takes less than thirty seconds to take those things off and put them in the jacket or coat pocket. The jacket has to go through the x-ray anyway, so it doesn't add anything really.
The shoes do go first together with the belt, then the big carry-on, then the jacket and lastly the briefcase and laptop.
I am working on the belt. My problem is that the non-metallic buckles are usually ugly and that there are no reversible two-color leather belts with a non-metal buckle on the market. I have found a nice buckle and plan to have just the right strap made to my specs. This way the belt will be dressy and classy enough but I still won't have to take it off.
Actually, TSORon is correct by pointing out that metal shanks consistently set off the WTMD. If the shoes have fiberglass or other non-metallic shank, they won't set it off.
Your point is well-taken. If it's something metallic inside the shoe other than the shank, it may or may not alarm the WTMD. Removing shoes eliminates the possibility that the cause of the alarm may have been the shoe shank.
Bottom line is that all WTMD alarms have to be resolved, right? If we're not in agreement on this, then the rest of the discussion if rather pointless.
If that's the case, then shoe removal should be voluntary. If someone's shoes cause a WTMD alarm, just resolve the alarm, but release the rest of us from the shoe carnival. Please.

I wonder why people do this everytime I go through security...unless it has a metal money clip in it, why take it out? It just gives you an extra thing to put back into your pockets and you run the risk of it being damaged or stolen.
My titanium amex card sets it off

Can't do that. I try to pay for something, then spend 15 minutes trying to figure out where I left my wallet. Hell, that happens everytime I wear another pair of pants
My United CC set one off. Some kind of wire in it. So now it's a habit to take it out.

My chipped US Official passport has set off the WTMD in Europe twice and at MCO once. Funny thing is my US tourist passport and Italian passport, both with chips, never have set off the machines
I had quite the humourous conversation with one MCO hooplehead screener who kept running the hand wand over the passport. He could not figure out why it kept alarming the handwand. I said it was the chip inside and he looked at me like I was speaking Arabic. After he thumbed through the book I was on my way. I find it sad and funny at the same time.
Ciao,
FH

maybe you're behind all the amex centurion card holders.
why do people take average size watches off? i have a fairly large watch for s woman and it never sets the thing off. some people take the "empty your pockets and divest all metal" too seriously.
Because some TSA yellers insist that you do. I wear a knee brace and shoes with orthotics and metal reinforcements in the sole. It's painful for me to stand without the support of the shoes and I cannot take the knee brace off. I tell the TSA screener that I will need to go through the secondary because of my shoes and the knee brace. Some of them still make me take my watch, glasses and the belt off and want the wallet out of my pocket.

Glasses, too? Really? If I had to put my (metal-framed) glasses in the bin, I'd be hard pressed to see the WTMD enough to walk through it.
I generally never take my wallet out of my pocket.

I have never seen glasses set off the WTMD, but I imagine that it can happen. It would take some serious glasses though, big Elvis types, or Elton John monstrosities. I wouldn’t worry about it. Glasses are not going to set it off.

Oh, I have! Granted, it's not common, but I've seen some very expensive designer sunglasses set off the WTMD all by their lonesome. As for the more commonplace, regular eyeglasses, though? Nah, they should be alright.
What that is counter to what your superiors have said all over the place in that the WTMD arent sensitive enough down low to detect metal in shoes. Gee yet another a 1 in centillion risk/chance (10 to the 303 power for those that cant think that high, and dont pull the richard reid comment cause it wont fly as TSA didnt catch it,but yet over reacted like a child that got spanked) that TSA cries the sky is falling and makes changes to its MO that arent likely to happen ever again. On top of that trade that for dirty floors and CP that open travelers (Especially diabetics and those with compromised immune systems) up to picking up infections due to poor sanitary procedures and up keep to go along with the power tripping rude staff in cop wannabe smurf suits (sorry shoe fits, and you really dont want to hear the comments i have heard from real LE about TSA, they would make a sailor turn red)
yet more TSA myths and BS blown out of the water by common sense and reality.

I think you will find that the floor/bottom region of a WTMD (ie foot/ankle area) is the most unreliable area for consistent alarms for metal objects. This is because of interactions between the bottom-most detectors and the floor or subfloor, and the lack of detection panels along the bottom perimeter.
Of course, I'm not a security proffesionnel like yourself, so please, go on kidding yourself about the capabilities of your little circus. .
Both of these are not true:
1. Where is "all over the place" that my superiors have said that about the WTMD?
2. Richard Reid was not leaving from the USA and TSA had nothing to do with screening him.
3. In your estimation that it is unlikely to happen again, it is not worth the risk.
4. Some LEO's dont care for TSA, that is a fact. You cannot speak for all of them however.
5. The bottom line is that you dont really know how the WTMD works and therefore you are speculating. You are speaking like a person that is in the know, and you are not.

I have a set process when I go through security. I take out the phones and watch and put them in a particular pocket on my bag. Once I pass the BP/ID check, my wallet goes in there too. It often sets off machines and to show consideration to those behind me, I make sure I am as efficient as possible. It also stops me from having any delays. Once I get my stuff and laptop back in case, I take out phone and put it in pocket, put on watch, put wallet in pocket and go.
