Exclamation Clear ceases operations [merged threads]

I know that some of us use the Clear Lanes, but I just went to the website to renew my yearly memebership, and they are closing down as of 11pm June 22, 2009. I knew it was bound to happen esp. when they raised the fees to 200 dollars per year, but really it was worth it to skip ahead of the line.

Let me get this in before this thread is moved to TS&S...

I have always been against CLEAR. This news makes me happy.

Confirms my suspicions about why turning over lots of personal data to a private company was a bad idea all along.

Hmm, glad I didn't pay for it (got 1yr free on the Hyatt deal).

I did get pretty good use of it - definitely got my money's worth

It was helpful during busy times at IAD and SFO but pretty much useless at MCO since they didn't seem to have a clue...

Wow... I just used it this AM @ EWR! I got a free year from Marriott but happily bought an extra year... I gave the three month promo memberships they sent me to a few coworkers and they all loved it too. It was a HUGE time saver at LGA & EWR for Monday 6AM flights :-(

Clear to Cease Operations

Just broke by Aviation Week, CLEAR, the registered traveler program, is shutting down. Apparently unable to continue to finance. Clear's website is dead & simply reads that the lanes are closing.

At ATL, they essentially built two brand new security checkpoints to accommodate Clear.

Airport Director Ben DeCosta is probably not having a very good day.

This topic is more suitable for the FT Newsstand. This topic is currently in Newsstand, thus I'm closing this thread.

Too funny, my membership just expired two days ago and I got an email "we have extended your membership for a short grace period during which your card will remain active."

That was a very short grace period indeed.

I'm sorry for the kids who worked these lanes, but I got the feeling they were minimum-wage students; they'll surely find work at Panera or such.

P.S. I got the year free for being Marriott Platinum and would certainly not have renewed considering it was substantially beneficial only twice (I can use Elite lanes).

Although I was able to use the elite lanes for United, I found Clear to be extremely beneficial as it was a timesaver and I could always count on getting through the security lines quickly. I was able to make a couple flights in the last year that I would have not otherwise been able to make due to long lines in the elite lanes. Sorry to see the company cease operations.

Clear in ATL was useless for those in the know.
