A congressman wants TSA to regulate maximum carry-on bag size

A congressman wants TSA to regulate maximum carry-on bag size

Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Friday, Jun 19, 2009

Congressman Dan Lipinski (Democrat of Illinois) introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives yesterday to "standardize and clarify the dimensions of carry-on baggage."

Right now, each airline sets its own rules on carry-on bag size and weight, and the airlines do their own enforcing of the rules. The congressman wants to create a one-size-fits-all law, and have the TSA enforce it.

The only legislation we need is a bill limiting the outright goddamned stupidity of what members can propose going forward.

With all the other problems we are facing you'd think Congressmoron Dan Lipinski could find something that would actually help this country.

Am I the only one astounded at the gall of this?

Edited to add:
gotta love when this country's legislation is driven by Congressmen's personal frustrations. Fifty bucks says he was late to a flight, didn't get overhead space, and decided "to do something about it." (Said with the appropriate level of huffiness in my voice, of course.)

That in and of itself is not a bad thing. It would be great if a Congress Critter finally blows his stack at the Shoe Carnival, War on Water, Gate Gropes, etc.

Don't get me wrong - I hate the war on water and the rest of it as much as the next gal.

It would just bug me deep down inside knowing that a law is the result of someone's DYKQIM game not working.

Right, exactly. Why can't we get some blowback at the more egregious violations of common sense?

I seem to remember former Senator Ted Stevens threatening something similar.

Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey...

I doubt that will ever happen, as long as our Elected Representatives get the special treatment they currently receive at DCA - and at other airports, I'm sure.

I seem to recall a member of the Kennedy family pulling a major DYKWIA in DEN when his bag would not fit past those stupid flip-down sizers they had on the x-ray machines then. The video of his outburst hit the news outlets.

When UA put in their barriers at LAX T6, (pre-9/11 when arilines did their own security), CO sued UA for anti-trust violations.

The congressman complains that airlines don't enforce their own rules, so he wants the TSA to invent rules that all airlines have to follow. What an idiot. The TSA has no business regulating the size of carry-on bags-- they already have enough trouble with their "primary" mission.

Something says more like

"Lipinski, from a Chicago district, home of the second largest airline in the US, received a unrelated $500,000 campaign contribution from the United PAC last week, along with an totally unrelated memo stating "Baggage fees are our biggest profit making center these days, say Dan, can you help us out here and do something Official to force a higher percentage of pax to check more bags? Thanks, your old bud Glenn. PS golf still on for Saturday?""

Ole Lip is on the Aviation Subcommittee, so he might have the pull to get this on the agenda.

Leaked SSI pre-memo:
"Prior to being allowed the privilege of showing their RealID to the highly trained TDC and his Blacklight and Loupe, all sheeple pax must now be preapproved by both the BDO and the new CSE, the Carryon Size Enforcer. CSE's will receive 0.5 hours of rigorous traing on use of their Craftsman Tape Measures before being certified to harassss passengers. CSE's serving flights to international destinations will receive an additional 0.5 hours of training on using the metric scale on the top edge of their Craftsman Tape Measures."

I am curious. Isn't there already a maximum size that is mandated by the FAA of 45 linear inches. I just got email from AA saying their baggage policy ""must be consistent with the policy officially filed with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)."

If he is worried that airline are setting the rule to be smaller, why not just let the market sort that out? Isn't an FAA policy a law, or, at least, effectively a law?
