"Wise" and illegal are two different things in many cases. In this case a illegal search is conducted under the auspices of air safety and the guy gets screwed. When they start putting vehicle search checkpoints at banks let me know.
In many, more rural, parts of America, having a weapon in your vehicle is quite common. You can drive to the grocery store, bank, post office, etc. and no-one says a word.
The next time you go to the bank, take your firearms. Please let us know what happens.

I do it every week. In Michigan, I carry a concealed weapons permit which specifically allows it. Facilities that serve alchohol, on the other hand, are off limits (and I have NO problem with that!).
The cops and the media blew this stop and story way out of reality. If there were really some malicious intent, don't you think that the guy would have loaded every gun?
It's too bad he was intimidated into pleading guilty at all, but at least he hasn't the black mark of a felony (which would take away his right to own any gun at all). I do wonder if the LAPD confiscated everything in the truck (or if they went to his house and confiscated every firearm there, too, as sometimes is the case), and if so, if he'll get them back.

A friend of mine did just that quite often. He lived in a party apartment complex and didn't feel safe keeping his pistols there, so he kept them in a large safe deposit box at the bank.

This guy is going to get the book thrown at him, yet TSAer Alvin Crabtree observes Bring Your Gun To Work Day, and not only did not get arrested, but is still employed.

Appropriate for the circumstances.
It is indeed good, and kudos should be awarded for looking at the whole picture and going easy on him.

I've taken my handgun, fully visible on my hip, to the bank plenty of times. Thankfully we have laws that distinguish between guns being used for protection, and guns being used in the commission of a crime. And this is in Los Angeles.

I don't know if it is technically illegal to bring your firearms to a bank or an airport. I do know that there are establishments here in Texas that have signs posted advising prohibitions against carrying firearms. This is mostly any place that sells liquor, beer or wine.
Otherwise, I don't know how you can fault the police for reacting the way they did.
