This is correct, there is only one checkpoint now at Terminal C, south of the food court. I had just passed the ID check, and was in line number 3 (I think there are 8 lines, one for each of the 4 metal detectors). I got my bins, and was at the metal table waiting for my stuff to go into the X-ray. All of a sudden, my nose had a burning sensation, then I started coughing. About 10 seconds later, I realized every one else around me was coughing also. The TSA person at the metal detector put a sign up in front saying something like this lane was closed, and they stopped all scanning and moving of people through security. I kept asking the TSA screener what had been sprayed, but no one said anything. After about 3-4 minutes, they started moving people through again and I wanted to get through as quickly as possible. I went to the restroom right behind the security area and washed my hand and face just in case. But no one ever told us what had actually happened.

And yes ButIsItArt, I have all of the Red Dwarf seasons on DVD. Funniest show ever.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, this happened right @ the checkpoint? In that case, was the 'hazardous-materials container' referenced by The Chronicle article previously the standard big plastic trash cans that contain all the 'explosive' liquids/gels?

Sadly, knowing the TSA, that ....ing idiot will keep their job and if lucky, in a few years, promoted to FSD or higher.
Say, didn't pepper spray used to be highly restricted from civilian use in the Republik of Kalifornia?

Sounds like it. I wonder what the response would have been had people started collapsing to the ground?

Welcome aboard kryten!

There should be a seperate hazmat bin for the *really* hazardous stuff, and then of course the big trash receptacle for the *could be* hazardous stuff. When we get a pepperspray we wrap it first in a glove or a baggie before putting it in the *really* hazmat bin.

The TSO was a moron! We have had pepperspray set off before at my airport, and it is a big mess! It resulted in a section of the airport being shut down for a couple hours until the spray dissipated. Sounds like there was only one checkpoint at SJC.
