Threat Level 2

UA Flight #927 (FRA-SFO), somewhere over Alberta, a very smooth ride…the seat belt lights came on at 16:30 PST. This was unwelcome, as I just putting on my shoes in preparation for a trip to the lav after a 3-hr nap. Two minutes later, one of the FAs came to my seat and instructed me to go with her to the forward galley; "I need to talk to you," she said. I unbuckled and went forward. The FA explained to me and to another F pax she had summoned that the captain had just informed the crew that our flight, and all other UA aircraft, were under "Threat Level 2". She added that UA917 (FRA-IAD) was under Threat Level 3 and was being diverted to PIT. After ascertaining that Pax 2 and I were willing and able to assist if necessary, she read to us, from a 3-ring binder, the basics for subduing an assailant and the rules of engagement. She asked us to remain extra alert and to not go to sleep (d’uh). We returned to our seats, mentally preparing for an assault.

Just 2 minutes later, the FA came back with the welcome news that all Threat Levels had been canceled. A few minutes later, she had some details: a male pax on UA917 had exposed himself to a female pax and her child. A FAM on 917 broke cover and engaged the offender. She did not know if 917 landed in PIT or went on to IAD.

These few minutes of excitement certainly overshadowed receiving an op-up to an F-suite on this 777 (I was in paid C on a Z-fare) today.

Wow interesting story! Is what the FA did procedure when there are no FAM's aboard?

Well, I suppose this event proves that the ultimate conclusion of all the TSA regulations/theater is not to make us all fly naked.

WOW! That's all I can say, that's scary/weird/wowish!

Can anyone provide greater detail in regards to the general procedure/what exactly this all means?

I'm sure someone probably can, but I hope he or she won't.

Looking at flightstats, it appears that it was the continuation of 917, IAD-SEA, that was diverted to PIT.

Is this another 1K benefit to which I can look forward?

Seriously, how did the FAs determine which pax to summon for possible assistance? I'm wondering if the status on the manifest actually was part of it, from the perspective that a 1K is probably more aware of flying and what's normal/abnormal behavior just by the amount flown? Or was it "big strong guys" or what?

Are you a FAM or work for UA, SeattleFred?

I apologize, I don't follow this forum that much but I wonder why you were told and brought forward.

I'm just curious what constitutes a "level 2 threat." Is there something wrong with that?

You would think that SOP dictate the FAM to not break cover unless if it's truly life and death situation, to avoid being drawn out with a ruse and subsequently neutralized.

Measly non life and death situations can easily be dealt with by us pax. The perp will have wished that a FAM intervened instead of a gang beating the tar out of him/her.

I am guessing the OP just looked "able" and was in a good position to spot, and attempt to diffuse any possible attack.

I wonder if they can put something in my MP profile that says I am willing to help kick butt in the case of an emergency

Neither of us is particularly large, but I think we were the only two F pax who were awake and under 70 y/o.
